Have you heard this ?

Couldn't be happier with my 600's mpg

OK, these 4:10 gears really just need to go in the garbage can... My truck is out of breathe WAY to early because of them. even with these 35's no no no... As you can see I'm obviously going FAST. this truck was actually supposed to come with 3. 73's but DODGE screwed up  but even 3:73's wouldn't be good enough. When will AAM or someone make these for us? -OR- if possible... Someone can maybe get me a blueprint and i could make them at work... .

Responses please ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... .

Nick

Find someone to switch axles (my 3. 73's for your 4. 10's) with you... I'd do it if you were closer as I'm not needing/wanting to drive as fast.

If you want to drive to Florida we could do it over a weekend. And regardless of my other replies to you I am not being sarcastic.

Wow... you can make your own gears!? I am impressed!

Actually, I bought my truck for towing. The hot rod days consisted of 2-68's,1-69,1-70,& 1-76 year models of Cameros for the go fast bit. :D

I don't like throwing stones in a glass house! But xcx you shouldn't be going that fast. Especially with those tires. I am sure you are exceeding the speed rating of the tire, on top of that you HAVE changed the geometry of the vehicle. Is going much faster really worth wrecking your truck again or possibly killing innocent bystanders. I like going fast also and do it quite a bit in my truck, but like others said get something made for speed! If you need a little more top end try the bd speed eliminator. Just my 2 cents. Lee.

My dad was a tool and die maker. Sounds like you are too?

Maybe someone will be able to produce the blueprints for you.

Oh, fer cryin' out loud... . I have 3. 73's, and have seen 105MPH rather easily, with more to be had (common sense prevailed, fortunately). That's with a 654rev/mile tire, and 3. 73 gears - top speed of 114MPH (or so). With your 601rev/mile tire, and 4. 10 gears, you top out at 113MPH. 3. 73's would give you a top speed of 124MPH.

So... I have to ask: if 113MPH isn't enough, and 124MPH isn't enough, just exactly how quickly do you want to kill yourself?

Seriously... . you're an 18 or 19 year old kid who doesn't have enough driving experience to realize that you have NO business running a vehicle like yours at those speeds, REGARDLESS of where you're running it. You have a stock truck, with a stock suspension (those spacers don't do a darn thing expect make it less stable), oversized tires (that aren't rated for that speed - have you ever seen a tire come apart because it was ran too fast? I have... it's not pretty), an altered (for the worse) center of gravity, and a driver behind the wheel that most likely couldn't even handle a properly-designed vehicle at those speeds should it develop a problem. I'm not saying this to put you down, Nick - it's the truth, and would apply to just about anyone else your age, save maybe someone like Adam Petty. Remember what happened to him???

And I'm not even going to address the "make your own gears" thing... .

Um, guys, I know everyone is quick to jump on Nick's arse and give him crap cuz he's a youngin and all, but perhaps he didn't mean he wanted to go faster than 113MPH or 124MPH. Perhaps he wants to be able to cruise at 80-90 on the wide open road, where it is fairly safe, and since he's not towing anything, keep the rev's down. Just a thought... :)

i just hate being at 90 mph and hving the truck seem like its out of breathe... Dont know about your trucks but mine seems to be out of breathe at 90... No pickup when i hammer it... And i dont plan on going 130 plus... . fastest id ever go is maybe 115...

Trust me i can make my own gears... I can program it on mastercam, generate the toolpathes of my tools i have programmed in the and make it. I can operate any lathe, mill, ANYTHING... i program 5 axis mills everyday... You guys take me lightly, im a pretty smart one when it comes to that stuff :). .

Nick

X-man. you really do offer up some good entertainment. Its fun to read your posts and learn stuff from what you do.

In my humble opinion and from having been there done that... I think the grief you catch from others is caused by the difference between 'smarts' and 'wisdom'.

By the way... can you make me a locker for the AAM... .

cheers.

I like him... . and I do my absolute best not to pick on people. Besides, I still know everything. Just ask my wife.....

yes dear, I'll go make up the couch...

I'm just givin' him a hard time. I'd really just like to see someone make their own gears and run them more than anything... but I figured if I give him a hard enough time, it'll push him to actually do it just to shut me up ;)

:p

What about materials? What alloys are appropriate for ring and pinion gears? And what about heat treating? Do you have a heat treating plan? Just checking to see whether you've got your ducks in a row... ;)

We send our stuff out for h/t. What Rockwell # do they go to for our gears? Im im dead serious if someone can get me a print... Maybe we can start something here. Ill start making and gears you want... Im gonna ask a guy at work who is a hot rod guy if he knows whered i be able to find some blueprints on gears. .

Here's what it sounds like to me. At 90 MPH with your current tire/gear combo you are sitting at approximately 2500 RPM. So when you nail it you've only got what... 700 RPM of room before redline.

With 373's you'd be at about 2250 RPM giving you about 1000 RPM before redline..... but unless you crank that 500 HP out like you wanted before... anything less and the truck will be a dog off the line. With 3. 55's and 35's and near stock HP you won;t be winning too many races... sure your top speed will be better... but that's it.

First off I agree that you don't need to be running so fast. 90... that's too fast and you'll burn up something before you know it. And don't use the excuse of "well I'm just keeping up with traffic". That's crap. There are at LEAST 4 lanes on any road I'd do 90 on... and I have NEVER had to run 90 to keep up with traffic... just change lanes. 75 is plenty fast for "cruising" just about anywhere.

For someone who had massive damage to his truck via an auto accident I sure am surprised that wasn't a wake up call to make you NOT want to drive like an idiot... . YES I know the accident wasn't your fault but come on... it CAN happen to you.

And you say you would only want to do 115? I'm sorry but unless you're at the track that 115 MPH is not much different from 130... and at the rate you're going what's to stop you from wanting more once you get there. It seems for you that TOO MUCH is not enough. I implore you to slow down on the roads... if you must have the speed do what you originally intended and build a truck for the track... NOT the street.

See... no picking or poking... just what I feel to be decent advice.

Now for the picking and poking. Everyone... let's give him a week or so and see what he comes up with. He'll get bored with his idea like he has in the past and change his mind. This is just his latest "plan". I've done the same thing when I was younger as I'm sure most of us have (and sometimes still do). Nick I'm not knocking your "smarts" or your abilities... . BUT just using your history on this BB as reason to say these things... that is your "pattern" so to speak.
