I just want to see what people think about this. I have a friend that said that if you have two trucks built the same , say with DDIII, DTT trans, Power Max 3, same everything done to each truck and they put out 450 hp and 950 lbs , his comment was that the truck with 3. 54 gears would be faster in the quarter that the truck with 4. 10 gears??? I just want to see what you guy’s think. I know in drag racing cars which one would be but want to see what you all think. Remember the trucks are the same just the gear ratio is diff.

I agree, the 4. 10 geared truck is going to be on the governor at 1000 feet if it hooks good off the line. The 3. 5 geared truck will still be pulling hard. My scenario is with stock tires on both trucks BTW.

Don't know crap about drag racing though... ...

I've drag raced a little and when you're talking numbers like that you're not going to get all that power to the ground right off the bat. The 3. 54 gears will have a bit more manageable torque curve and a bit easier launching. The 4. 10's will run out of gear sooner but should take off a bit quicker... all lane conditions being equal. I think in an all out drag race it would come down to driver ability and reaction time. As far as towing goes, hands down the 3. 54's. You can make up the torque lost with the motor and get better mileage at speed to boot.

Diesels like being lugged

Notice how your truck accelerates when overdrive and lockup bang in. It just seems to like that its power band is right about 1500 to 2000rpm. The 3. 54 is the way to go if your'e not hauling really heavy loads. If youare the4. 10 will ease the loads onthe trans.

Having some experience with racing, it is very easy to over gear. Especially when you have a motor that doesnt rev high. My car ran faster with 3. 73's than with my current 4. 10's. I plan to switch out to 3. 73's again. When you make that much torque, put it to use. The 3. 54 gears will make the torque of the engine work a little harder and more than make up for the difference in the end

I agree with mills, makin that diesel work for it is better than chuckin huge gears in there. These motors run better under load conditions.
