I am jumping in on this after the truck was picked up, but want to throw in a bit that I had mentioned before on previous posts regarding mileage and rpms.
Sanddemon,
Welcome to the forum!!!!!
While on paper the engine has better efficiency over 2000 rpms, I still haven't seen that in real world economy that is really all that significant. I have the auto and 3. 54 gears with 305/70/16 tires and a 4x4. My truck doesn't suffer from performance at all. I pull a 3000 pound flatbed trailer with an additional 3000 to 6000 pounds on it from time to time when I am moving my other vehicles around and except from a dead start, don't really notice the taller gearing. And I am not drag racing when I have a fully loaded trailer, so if it takes me a second or two longer to reach cruising speed than someone else, who cares. I got the taller gearing for decreased engine speed. I don't think the real world mileage is all that better at 2300 rpms than it is at 1800 rpms (my opinion), and even if the 4. 10's are only spinning 400 rpms higher than the 3. 54's that is 24,000 revolutions extra for every hour driven. What is the extra wear and tear going to cost? And the extra sustained noise of the higher revving rattler could wear on you as well.
In summary, I think you made the right choice in going with the lower gear. Easy power mods can be added later that will give you increased performance without sacrifice.
As is stated, this is a topic that is pretty near evenly divided. Comes down to a matter of preference.
Enjoy the new truck. Be hard to wipe that smile off for a mighty long time
