New truck will be '08 3500,4x4,CC,auto. Will be towing a 14k fifth wheel. We will be doing flat land and mountain towing but prefer the mountains. So, 3. 73 or 4. 10, what do you think?

If you are buying it to tow set it up to tow. I have 373's wish I had 410's. I do believe auto's live better with 410's they don't have to work as hard. And a double over drive how cool is that?

04. 5 3500 4wd dully cc 373 6speed 50k

93 2500 2wd xc 354 auto 250k

4. 10s... ... I have 3. 73s and they are good but for you load and such 4. 10s would be the ticket. I how ever wish i had 3. 55s like my 99 had.

The 3. 73s are nice for rolling the flats but when the road points uphill the 4. 10s are the way to go. If you're running the Cummins and 4. 10s there isn't much on the road that will pass you uphill pulling a load. 4. 10s = happy Cummins.

I think you should talk to Steved. He gets 25 to 30 MPG with 4:10s.

Right... . :-laf

I have pulled with 3. 73s in the mountains for years, and bigger loads than 14k. The cummins has more than enough power stock to pull all the passes on I-70 above the speed limits grosing 24k. I know, I have done it a bunch of times and always with 3. 73s.

IMO 4. 10s just waste rediculously expensive fuel.

I find it funny how others pump my numbers up... I don't even need to do it because you guys do it for me!

Pathetic.

chassis cab? that's a 5sp or 6sp auto, right? I'd get the 3. 73's if they're available. These engines make so much torque and with all those gears, you'll be fine with 3. 73's IMO.

I've got 4. 10's in my '04 and hate them. They pretty much require 35" tires just to keep the revs at a semi-sane level unless grandma is driving the truck at 60 or below.

4:10s with a double overdive 6 speed auto might be all right, but I really like my 3. 73s w 35" tires. You still run out of rev's before you can get thru the crosswalk in 1st... . Besides, you only need gears if you don't have enough engine!

I just can't drive that slow... I got a driving award yesterday for 97 in a 50... whoops!

So do they present that to you in person (and require a little $$$ to make sure you show up for the award) or did they just give you a certificate you can mail in? :-laf
