Towing Twins

Blew trailer a tire yesterday

With the torque going up and the fuel prices also going up does it seem like maybe the 3. 73 gear would be better to get now in a new truck. That's based on staying with everything being in stock condition.

3:73 will be fine. If you do heavy towing, get 4:10's. If you want to go with larger tires, say 35"s and up, also consider the 4:10's. Oo. :p :D

I assume you're talking about an auto, as the 4:10 is only available with the auto transmission. The manual 6 speed comes with a 3:73 only... ;)

One thing to consider. If you are in the top gear you can shift down but not up. So if you are running a 4. 10 gear and want a little more speed without the RPM noise when you are empty you are stuck. If you are running a 3. 54 and you run out of pull you can always downshift. That's what the transmission is for. If you are towing or hauling heavy for most of your truck usage then the 4. 10 makes sense. Otherwise I don't think it does.

If you are going to tow at all in an area with any hills get the 4. 10s, as mentioned they are only available with the auto. As far as the RPM difference between the 3. 73s and the 4. 10s it will make almost no difference at all empty in mileage, but when you are towing you will need to be above 2000 RPM so if you want to be able to tow in OD on the hills get the 4. 10s.

HELLO ,

Not to hi-jack the thread, but I have a truck with 4. 10s and a six speed. :D

The 4. 10 / 6 speed combo ended when the G56 speed came out in mid 2005 model year. You probably have the NV5600, which was available with the 4. 10's.

Rick,

Is that a change Dodge made for '05?

When Dodge went with the G-56... it eleminated the 4:10 option in the 6 speed. If you have an 05 with a 6 speed you have the NV5600 transmission... :)

:ast I checked, Dodge's web site allowed you to build your own w/ a 6 speed & 4. 10's.

I do a lot of drooling over at dodge.com/build_my_dream_3500SRW...

Thanks for the clarifications. I know I have a NV5600, see my sig :D . That's why I figured it must have been a change somewhere along the way for '05s, if you can no longer get a 6 speed/4. 10 combo.
