Whats the temp been out there lately, were in a warm flow now,10C+ today---last week it was -36C(-47C with wind chill). Snow is almost gone, another few days like today and i can turn my "SMARTY" back up to #9 :) . Got to love that racket---I have a busy-body/nosey neighbor that complained to the city bylaw about my company ford diesel(2001-7. 3LT) being noisey in the morning---can't bring the truck home any more,so i take the car most days now. I can hardly wait till its real cold again and let mine rip for about 20+ minutes. Not trying to be ignorant with the neighbor but you don't hear me complain about her loud kits screaming all day long while i try to catch a late afternoon/early evening nap. I have to get up for work at 230 am and usually work 12+ hours a day so my sleep schedule is split---gotta get a little shut eye when i can,but i don't whine or complain about other peoples noise. ---"Praying for some colder weather and i think i'll take the truck" :-laf :-laf :-laf DW

It was -15C (5F) this morning when it kicked in. I wasn't expecting it to kick in yet, I thought it had to be colder that that :-laf

How can your factory stock truck be "banned" from your house/neighborhood if the government let ford sell them, and they were in spec as far as sound DB's are concerned.

Understandable if you have a open exhaust 500CI big block running at 2:30am, but a factory motor, stock... . you need to tell them to go stick it where the sun don't shine.

Commercial Vehicle--- up here we have a by-law(city)that states" if a commercial vehicle is rated over 4000kg(2. 2 pounds in a kg-so 8800lbs)GVWR by the manufacturer it cannot be parked in front(driveway--your property,no back alley here) or on the steet after 7:00pm to7:00am(12hr window). YES,i found out the hard way with a knock on my door from city hall, i got just a warning but first offense was a $250. 00,next500. 00 +they will tow away with impound charges. This means that the guy who drives his "commercial vehicle" home everynight and is above the weight rating(most 1 tons) can be fined/towed. I drive a Ford-f 350 1 ton cube-14ft box,one of my other neighbors at the end of the street has the same thing but with a flatedeck for his oilfield work. That can also be classed as a violation as well but doesn't stick out like a cube does, all i/she has to do is call---go figure. My Cummins is louder than the Ford and i will take it to work mostly on Sat/odd Sunday if necessary just to let her know that--- I'M THINKING ABOUT HER THIS MORNING". PS-----One thing she did do was pi%#off a few other neighbors around here,if you ever needed something big delivered to your house(lumber/furniture) i was the guy to ask, never mined at all to help out and save you some $$$ instead of paying for it to be deliverd. I still do it now but i watch those times. ---remember there's one on almost every block---sorry for my rant/long post eek:

I'm glad I finally got to hear it. I probably will never hear mine since I live in Tennessee and winter in Florida!

The first time I ever heard the 3 cyl cut out I was in a concrete parking ramp. It was about -15F it started alright sat in it made sure all was going to be ok high idle kicked in I walked away got about 100 feet away when the 3 cyl cut out kicked in I about soiled myself also if you could imagine what it sounded like in the parking complex of a 5 star hotel :--)

Is the 3cyl. high idle a stock program, or is it a SMARTY program, or what. I don't know what it is, but I can only imagine what I would be thinking if mine kicked into that and I didn't know what it was :-laf

What is the advantage of only idling on 3cylinders?

Sorry for the questions

From what I understand, it is a stock program form Cummins and Dodge doesn't enable it. The smarty enables it in all softwares. I've had it go into high idle on a few different softwares but only the 3cyl ting once. The truck heated up much faster than normal, kinda expected with 500F EGT's!

John

It was originally a TSB that came out in the fall of 2001. It was a two step process in trucks made before then. 1. Flash the computer. 2. Enable 3 cylinder idle, which also turns of high idle. The TSB was designed to prevent bent push rods on trucks idling in cold weater. Side effect is quicker warm up. FWIW an exhaust brake really helps with warm up also.

Trucks built after the TSB (2002's after around the end of Sept. 2001) had the flash already, but it was not enabled. I took me and many others a couple trips to the dealer to get it enabled.

Marco included it in the Smarty software, and set it to enabled. So if you try a Smarty out, you end up with it on, even after you set it back to stock. As you get Marco's stock software, not what you had before. Not sure how Marco addressed the oil pressure gauge idiot light issue!! SNOKING
