Just picked up a 2000 Dodge 4x4 ex cab short box for really cheap (180,000 miles). The previous owner said it lost oil pressure and smoked black horribly. He mentioned he went thru about 3 gallons of oil getting it home (25 miles). It wouldn't start when we picked it up to load it on the trailer. Got it home and found the turbo is seized up, dumping oil through the intercooler.

Need to find a good used HX35 to put on it. Also need to remove the intercooler and piping to drain all the oil out.

We are going to see if it will start with the intake horn removed so it can breath.

The only codes that showed up were 0460 (fuel level circuit high I think) and 1596 which is APPS sensor high I think.

What else should we ensure to do?

Thanks...

I would take the injector lines off to get top cover off the intake and clean the oil out from inside there also if there was that much oil pumped through it. Also clean the sensors in the intake also. Pull the plug on the pan and pull an oil sample to see if it didn't take out the bearings. Or just check for pieces, Its never good to have had it running with no oil pressure.

I'd try turning it over by the old tried and true ratchet on the alternator pully nut before trying to start it. If the turbo blew the seal and dumped oil in the cooler then into the engine you could have a fluid locked cylinder (loaded with oil) and as we all know fluid doesn't compress and if you try to make it things can break . . .

So, if you can only turn it over by the alternator nut so far you may have something broken or as mentioned fluid lock. In a gasser to get the oil out you'd simply remove a spark plug and crank it over but, not sure how we'd get the fluid out, if that's the problem you have, of our engines?

If all goes well for you don't forget to have the oil that's passed into the cooler flushed out.

Bill, if there was fluid filled cylinder the prevented the engine from turning do you know how to get fluid out?

Well, we removed the intake horn, plugged the oil line feeding the turbo, topped it off with oil and it fired right up! It has good oil pressure now and seemed to run ok. Next we are going to get all the oil out of the intercooler and lines. Shopping for a good cheap HX35 right now and then we can take it for a test drive.

Thanks for the PM's everyone, I think I've got a HX35 found for a good price.

On another note, where can I find some RV275 injectors (new or used)?

I just bought a brand new set w/o core from www.mwfi.com for $300 bux for the set. Cheaper than other places I have seen them advertised for. Customer service is excellent too. Would you believe that a stocker only sent out 1 injector? instead of a set of six??

One phone call and they had the other five to me the next day. That's service.

Just wanted to throw my . 02 in here. Make absolutely sure all the oil is out of the aftercooler. I work for a Cat dealer. We had a 3406 semi that came in last week. The mechanic forgot to clean the cooler. It was not good. The computer tried to shut down at 2600 RPM. We figure the engine finally came apart at around 4500 RPM. Sounded like a Scheid truck making a full pull. Lots of smoke too. Oh yea the engine was NOT salvagable!! Just a warning.

We figured the only reason it didn't run away on the previous owner was that the turbo seized up and it couldn't suck enough air threw it to run away? Regardless, it will all get cleaned out prior to running it again.

Thanks for the heads up on mwfi.com

Another plug for MWFI. I used to reside in the Chicago area, and got spoiled by being able to drop by their Palatine office to pick up Stanadyne PF.
