Looking at an 06 2500 mega 18K with an auto trans tomorrow. To scared of the 6. 7 so this will be as new as I go! My first and second gen have all been 5 speeds. So how does the auto hold up and what should I look for while I give it a test drive? Any advice would be great! Thanks

You will love the truck..... However, the auto is not the strongest. If you leave the truck stock and service the trans. like you are supposed too, the trans will be just fine. It will do strange things like hunting for gears and so on..... You will get used to it. With 18k, you should be fine. I had 90,000 miles on mine before I had to do my trans. Enjoy the "New" truck.

The 48RE is pretty good. A $400 valve body will work wonders. Mine has handled my Juice pretty well so far.

But, turn up the power more than about 60 hp and you better be ready to open up your checkbook!

I got 70k on mine with about 60k of those miles have been with the juice, it does slip a little and run hot at times but it still works good. And i change the fluid and filter every 10-15k with mopar atf+4 its cheep at walmart:-laf

Thanks for the info guys! Just found out I'm going to be a daddy again soon! I better get that mega cab soon. We are out of room as it is!

congrats on the child - I have two girls (3 yrs and the other is 9 months) and they are a handful that's for sure!

This past Sat I changed my 47RE and x-fer case (amsoil atf) and both axles (75W-90) over to amsoil and adjusted the bands in the 47RE. I did a full exchange for the transmission (17 qts). So far I have about 200 miles since the change and so far the truck seems to really like the fluids.

A lot depends how you drive the truck and maintain the transmission. Current truck is a 2006 4X4 QC HD 2500 with the 48RE... . 380 RWHP and not a problem with the transmission. My son has my old 98. 5 (same configuration as the 2006) with a Banks Stinger and the 47RE and close to 150K miles with NO unscheduled maintenance on the original transmission (he also tows a 32' travel trailer). It can't just be blind luck!

The ride on the 2006 is great... the wifes Volvo gathers dust!! Enjoy!

The only problem I've had with mine in 88K miles came from when I first bought it. It was hard to take it out of park. Dealer replaced the valvebody to fix the problem. I wanted to go ahead and use an aftermarket one..... but theirs was free! LOL.

I havent noticed any slipping or gear hunting. Only thing I'be done to it so far is change the fluid, filter, and pan to a high capacity Maghytec one.

How do you get a full exchange? is a pump required or is there a drain plug on the converter?

Here is what I did:

1) drop the pan and clean it with solvent (I used brake cleaner) and let dry. Clean off magnent and replace.

2) adjust rear band and replace filter

3) replace pan and adjust front band

4) pour in ATF to match the amount that came out from dropping the pan (mine took approx 6. 5 qts)

5) then remove the cooler line closest to the rear of the truck (this is the one that contains the fluid returning to the trans from the cooler)

6) attach 5/8" ID hose to cooler line with a hose clamp, then route into bucket

7) start truck and put in neutral (no fluid will come out when it is in park)

8) run until 4 qts comes out

9) shut off truck

10) pour in 4 qts

11) repeat steps 7-10 two more times (so a total of 16-18 qts of fluid are replaced).

12) reattach cooler line, start truck, take it for a long spin (10-15 miles) to get trans fluid up to operating temp, then check and top off as necessary. Make sure you DO NOT overfill it.

Good luck.

So I drove the truck the other day and it seamed very strong. Other than all the dust from sitting so long the whole truck is golden, no leaks etc. I'm going back next Sat. to deal. What kind of mileage can I expect? Any other tips or things I need to look for other than the obvious? This truck is a whole different beast than what I'm used to. Can't hardly even hear it running!

I would expect 18-20mpgs while empty cruising if you keep it under 70. My truck has been pretty much flawless for 60k miles. I had to recently replace a rear driveshaft u joint and a front unitized wheel bearing. I think the truck is doing very good for what it does. I use it pretty frequently to pull my toy hauler and my 20ft quad trailer. Mileage is awesome and the truck loves to pull. I think you will really like the Megacab. It has so much space that your kids can sit on opposite sides of the truck and cannot battle each other. Plus most small kids cannot reach the back of the seats to give you the famous lower lumbar back massage. Scotty
