OK, we have PDR cam, Scheid cam, F1 Helix cam!

Whats the pros and cons to these cams?

How much does each one of these cost?

And what should I expect to pay to have one installed? Because everyones shop rates are different, maybe total man hours and shop supplies might be a way to answer this!

Scheids website is $427. 50 for the Cam.

Installation will run about $500-600 give or take.

Uses stock lifters.

No cons that I can think of.

Ditto on what Justin said except I have the PDR cam. In fact it was Justin's fault that I got a cam :-laf :D He's very persuasive!

References you can PM on TDR/DTR for using 3rd gen Scheid cam: Justin, Lone Star, DriverNo8

References you can PM on TDR/DTR for using 3rd gen PDR cam: Piers of course, Diesel Nut, myself, Battering Ram (DTR), soon to be Matt400

Maybe if you PM "Bob Wagner" or I think "Jet Pilot" on the 2nd gen forums and they can give you the run down on the F1 Helix cams.

Hmmm... are cam threads going to start turning out like auto transmission or Amsoil threads?

Anyway, whatever brand you go with you will be happy... mark my words! BTW I don't know if Diesel Dynamics officially does 3rd gen cams, but I seem to remember seeing a post or two last year or so where someone (Keith???) mentioned that they were working/testing on them... so you might want to add them to the mix.

I gotta get that done.

I choose PDR cuz I wanted a new cam and PDR comes highly recommended here. I think the Scheid is a regrind and the Helix is too new to make me feel warm and fuzzy.

You should ask the cam supplier that question as I am sure it depends on some variables. My new cam with the trucks low miles does not require it.

I had ~40,000 miles on my truck and the installer (Dyno-Mite Diesel) reused my stock lifters after consulting with PDR. No ill effects! In your "ATS twins post" I put a bunch of links on it. In the first link Evan Beck, who did the swap, answered some questions about the install. The only odd thing on mine (305/555) was cutting and welding a cross brace between the inter-cooler and transmission cooler to gain some clearance. Even if you looked for the modification, it is hard to find. On the +04. 5 trucks I believe the crossmembers are removable. Figure on a 8-10 hour job if you're a good mechanic.
