Would this be worth doing?

Does anybody have any Brownie experience or information? I stumbled onto a

Watson, Brown, Lipe, Spicer 3 Spd auxiliary trans model 5531. I think it might be a pretty cool piece to put behind my 6 spd but I would like to find information on it or if anybody has or is running one of these units.
 
I can't add much except to point to the search function. A few weeks ago someone gave a fairly good briefing on the Brownies, history, model numbers, and a key to the letter code for the ratios of the various models.



Some have a underdrive for the top gear.



As I'm thinking about this, I think the info was buried down in a thread about aux trannys.

I had a 4sp brownie box in a dodge 800 yrs ago, it's a busy transmission, you can get hung up between gears on both at the same time, they are great for gutless engines (n/a diesels and gas) to pull heavy loads and in a few miles keep up with flatland traffic. I personally can't see one in a ctd pickup because to use it you have to overtax everything else, brakes, frame, bearings,tires etc.
 
I had seen the ones in the past posts, but there was nothing listed specificaly on the brownie 5531, the posts were based on the 5831. I have been trying to find info on this particular model. I would like to find out what the ratios are and to see if it would hold up to some power.
 
I would think it could handle anything you could throw at it with a 1-ton truck,maybe they made one where all the ranges were underdrive but I never saw one, possibly in a gas/class8 application, It would be easy enough to check
 
I am not sure, but I think the 5531 is kinda big, about the size of the 6031. It also has PTO capabilitys that the 5831 does not. The 5831 is a good size for pickup trucks, however it is obsolete, hard to get parts for and will not take the power of the Dodge Cummins when hauling big loads. I have one in my Cummins powered Ford, (see sig. ) All the Spicer aux. transmissions with numbers lower than the 8,000 and 12000 series are old.



If you can and like to shift with out syncros, then you will have fun with it. They work very well for what they are intended for, splitting gears.
