I am a new owner (January of this year) of a 1991 w250 equipped with a 3 speed transmission. I am still new to the diesel world and new to TDR. My question is whether it is possible to install a manual transmission or if this is not possible an automatic with overdrive. I am only 21 and in school so I cant go to extreme but am trying to research some possibilities.

I recently attended a diesel extravaganza at our fairgrounds that had many trucks from different states. We had truck pulls, dyno and much more. This experience has left me wanting to do some pulling. Is it possible to build my truck to do some occasianal sled pulling while still maintaing its street drivability and reliabiliy? What else would I need as well with a different transmission such as torque converter, driveshaft etc.

I welcome all thoughts and comments. Thank you in advance for responses.

No

No, but I saw him pull. Im trying to avoid as much as possible having to be towed off the track. His driveshaft didnt look good dragging across the ground. I know stuff happens, but I want to build my truck up right.

I talked to Scheid Diesel, the diesel shop here today and they told me to bring a Getrag/ 5 speed with all the clutch cables and everything and that they would be able to install it for me with a new clutch. I am going to look for one around the local salvage yards and such unless someone has one.

Can anyone offer me any tips on what to look for when buying a used one? Does anyone have a manual transmission and all the necessary cables and so on for sale that will fit in a 1991 W250?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Where are you located?

Hi Trq,

Where are you located? When I part with my beloved (cough, gag, choke) Getrag, you can have it, the bell housing, clutch, and pressure plate. I am going to install a NV5600 six speed in the next year or so. The synchros are gone in second and it could use a bearing kit. But it would make a good core and you would have a bell housing, etc.

Jeremy

PS I am located in north-cental Indiana near Peru.

I live in Terre Haute, Im not sure how far Peru is but it cant be that far. How much would you be asking for the used one when you get rid of it? Are there rebuild kits for them?

Im definitely interested, how long before you install your new transmission? Thanks for the reply.

I live about 100 miles north of Indianapolis on US 31. So maybe 3 hours apart. I will be doing the swap sometime next spring I hope. We can work something out on price later. It won't be much. I saw a Getrag rebuild kit on drivetrain.com for less than $350. It included the synchros, bearings, and seals.

Sorry cant help you on the transmission swap, but hey it's good to see a 1st gen TDR member in Terre Haute. I'm 26. I've had my truck for about year, and have done just about everything to it except engine mods. If you'd like to share some knowledge and or help each other let me know. Bill

What Color and model of truck do you drive? (D-250 or W-250) I drive a 1991 W-250, two tone brown with no tail gate. I have a 12 foot trailer with a 2002 Exmark mower that I use for my mowing business.
