On my 93 1 ton,it felt like the 4 wheel drive wasn't quite working correctly. I put jack stands under the front and rear, then proceded to test the truck in and out of 4x4. Everything works fine in 2 wheel drive, but when shifted into 4x4,the back and only front left tire are working. I manually turned the right side while it was supposed to be turning, but nothing really happened,it never spun like it should have. Before you ask,yes both lockouts were locked. It did not seem like the right side lockout did not "snap" when I flipped it into 4x4. Is this my problem?Could it possibly not be locking the axle shaft into 4x4 when I lock in the lockout? Is this a common problem?

Put it in 4x4, in park. Jack up front end and turn one tire by hand, other one should turn the opposite direction. If not, something isn't locked in (or perhaps siezed up).

This is normal operation of a 4x4 axles. If you do not have posi's or lockers, limited slips. Under heavy power appilication. You will spin the left front and the right rear tires. These are the two drive postions most affected by engine torque.

In the way you checked it. The power will transfer to the side with the least resistance. If you would have stoped the tire that was spinning it would have turned the other one then.

When I had it in the air, both of the rear and only the left front tire were spinning,I assumed that all 4 should turn when in 4x4 mode.

No sometimes you won't get all four to turn. The open center sections only turn the wheels with the least resistance. Most of the time.

Yup, I agree with Philip.....

The rear is Limited Slip (torgue loc or trac loc) so both turn... . the front is an "open diff" so only one wheel spins... .

Don't feel bad, when I do that test I only got 2 wheels turning , the right rear, and left front.

bob.

The front being an open diff is also why if the driveshaft is locked (in park, etc) that if you turn one wheel, the other will turn backwards.

Yaaa... story of my life bud... . you should'a seen the razzing I got for the "1 wheel peel" I did at our 1st Gen Bomb Day out at PDR.

Heck, if I figured I could get away with it, I'd swipe nascar's LSD, or better yet Piers' detroit locker... . unfortunately, I'm outta porkchops for marks dog, can't outrun Mark, and Piers is never outta his truck long enough to do the deed... .

Ahhh well, that's life...

Bob.

Dang, no more pork chops :D Humm... . you don't travel much, do ya... ... maybe I should install an electric fence around my LSD :-laf I've also heard the above condition referred to as "Peg Leg" :-laf
