I made an appointment, with my local Dodge Dealer, for my 30 k schedule B maintenance on my 2003 HO 4x4 Quad Auto SRW for next Monday. I don't have the time to do the job. I was stunned at the quote the dealer gave me 505. 00 United States Dollars!

He also noted that the valves would probably need to be adjusted at an additional $200. 00. The total would be in the $750. 00 range for the complete 30k schedule B service.

Doesn't this quote seem to be a bit excessive or am I just out of touch?

I'm only 1/2 way there (16k miles) but I know what to expect.

My dealer wants over $70 to change a fuel filter (bought two from Genos for $24 and did it myself).

They want $60 to change the oil (I got them to throw in 14 oil changes for free!)

$30 to rotate my tires (they did it wrong the first time so they promised to do the next one free - I'll probably do it myself)

I've looked at the maintenance requirements (sched "A" and "B"), but my dealer still says "you should change yer erl every 3,000 miles. That's what Dodge says... "

Yeah, right.

Welcome to the free market economy.

I'm curious to hear what others are paying.

Well I have my own private mechanic. He was a Dodge/Cummins certified and decided to go on his own after seeing what the dealers where charging and not doing for the money. Oil change $49. 00 includes grease points, checking brakes, adding any fluids that need toping off. Tire rotation $30. 00, fuel filter change $15. 00 if done with oil change. He usually goes over the truck from front to back each time it is in to see if anything is leaking, loose, ect. He may not be the cheapest around but he knows the cummins inside and out. He is the only one that has touched my trucks since they came off the dealers lot.

If you aren't comfortable doing it yourself, try a Cummins dealer, I'll bet a lot cheaper..... BTW: I know I read somewhere that the 3rd Gen. 's have longer valve adjustment schedules than the previous motors. I don't think your due.

I was of the understanding that the valves did not need adjustment till 100k. Discount Tire will rotate the tires for free. At 30K, the only thing you should be doing is fluid and filter changes.

My '01's first service by the dealer was at 30K... ... over $600!

At 60K, I took it to Cummins Northwest and they did a lot more work and the total was under $450 (I bought a serpentine at the dealer - over $60 - if I would have let Cummins NW obtain it, it would have been $42)

So.....

Without a mechanic out of the dealership (like I have for my Harley)... ... Cummins NW gets my major maintenance.

BTW - my valves arn't due till 150,000miles..... is it much different on the 3rd gen? (I have a '04. 5 in the womb right now)

I thought the valve adjustment on the 3rd gen trucks was moved to the 1st overhaul, at 350K! There is no way you should need to adjust them at 30K. It it were me, I definetly would NOT let the dealer do it anyways.

If the service writer is so clueless to order up a valve adjustment at 30K, just think what kinda talent is back there doing the work?

Run away from this dealer... .

I didn't get my first valve adjustent on my 12v until I had over 100,000 miles. The Cummins dealer said they were all in specs and only tweaked 2 of them.

Panama City, Fl. Bay Dodge is the dealer. I live about 30 miles North of town in the boonies.

Just got hosed at the Dealer for $74 for my first lube, oil and filter change yesterday. I have 1k miles, so I wanted to get all the crap out of the motor. I bought the DC service package for dealer diesel oil changes along with my DC Extended Warrantee. It worked out to $19/change. Dealer gives me a free loaner car, or does it while I wait (they are 30mi. from me). Sounds great right? I called the salesman who made the appointment and said even though I didn't get my coupon book for the changes from DC, he would take care of it. Needless to say, I got hosed for the oil change. They could have thrown it to me for free to ofset the FIVE MONTH delivery time for the truck, but I at least expected to get it for the $19. If I had known, I would have changed it myself. Turns out the coupons are mileage or time sensitive anyway... 3,000mi. or 6mos, whichever comes first... BUT not a mile or day before that. Live and learn. I did get a free set of Mopar rear formed carpet mats with nifty Ram's head on them, though LOL! It seems a $47,000 Laramie with EVERY option still doesn't come with rear mats.

Most dealers first one is FREE. I think MOPAR helps with the money on that one,in facr almost SURE there is FACTORY reimbursment on first oil change. I get the NORMAL mailouts from my dealer and a oil & filter change with MOPAR 15w40 and filter is $54. 00 and tax. Not too bad for 12qts of oil and a factory filter. At 15k I'm going to Amsoil 15w40 and 15k oil changes as per the BOOK!

I'm thinking of doing the same thing. Can't void the warranty and it's long enough to get your money back on the synthetic. Should be about the same cost as dino oil at 7500 miles.

Run do not walk a way , take day off do it your self unless you make more than 750 a day then go for it . You will get better miles pr gal as your check book will be lighter by one page. Ron in Metro Louisville KY .
