The BFGoodrich website, Recomends a 8 to 9. 5 inch wide rim. If you mount that size tire on that size rim your going to get a large amount of sidewall bulging which would make the driveability somewhat unstable. Most Tire companies wouldn't even do it for you because they know it's unsafe.



I would upgrade the rims first.

While no tire manufacturer will recommend it ( I don't either), you could get away with it. The biggest trade off will be really weird wear. Unless you're getting these tires for free, I'd say ditch the stock wheels and go with some 8" wide after-market style. Even chrome spokes or white spokes won't set you back that much.



Otherwise, go with some 255/85R16's. Same height but narrower by about 2 inches and they'll work on your stock wheels just fine!

while Mactruck is totally correct in what the manufacturers are stating in the spec sheets, I've seen plenty of Rams around here that have the 305's on the stock rims. I've gotten down on my hands and knees to check the rim width... same as mine.



My tire guys said the only issue maybe an increase in wear on the center of the treads (pulling in more on the sidewalls, causes the center of the tread to want to popout). . but with all I"ve looked at, not one I've seen has any abnormal wear. This has come up in other threads on TDR, and others are doing it and havent had any wear problems either.



Now the funny part. My window sticker and other things say my stock rims are only 6. 5" wide. While at my friends shop, balancing my wife's tires... I used his rim width caliber... it works fine. . my wife's rim (need the measurement to set up the balancing machine) measure as marked.

I went out to my truck and checked mine. . they measured 7. 5" not 6. 5". ??
 
I believe the measurement is from the inside of the rim ;) This is because of the difference in rim thickness with steel and aluminum wheels.



My wheels measure 9 inches in width but are supposedly 8" (Stock Aluminum)
 
Mactruck, I thought of that... but the rim is not a 1/2 thick (stock steel) on each side... and my wife's measured as marked on the rim(aftermarket alum. ). .

hence why it doesnt add up.

ya I'm at a loss for a good answer for it to and it's been urking me.

but it might be the reason why the 305's havent been a problem on the stock steel rims. ??
 
When I bought my truck it had stock rims and 305/70's.



I'm now running 315/75's, but don't tell anyone. It's not recommended.

Yes sir, 6. 5" stock wheels.



I've been running 45 psi, but I aired down to 25 psi for the pulls at Muncie. I still haven't put any air back in them because I'm lazy. Surprising how well they handle even at 25 psi.

The 305's will rub a little in a full lock turn. I've seen them on a couple of trucks and they work fine... drive good, wear good, and look good (Pathfinder ATR).



The problem with going to aftermarket wheels is the stupid offset. They stick out farther and, because of that, they rub worse. A friend of mine has had aftermarket wheels (2 different kinds) and they rub with 285's!



Also, because of the offset, the tires stick out farther than the fenders. Not only does it look kind of dopey, but if you get in the mud on the jobsite or whatever, they throw mud onto the windshield.
 
i run this combo on my 98



no rubbing whatsoever





the fronts do get "scalloped" or "chopped" after a few thousand miles but I assume it is because of it being 4x4 and I then rotate them to the back and it wears them "true" again



I run them at 55-60 psi



my size is 305 70 16. 5







Maybe the front wear is from what you guys are describing??????
 
I just installed some Cooper Discoverer A/Ts 305/70/16 on the stock chrome wheels. They're a bit hard for to balance but don't rub at all, no lift - stone stock suspension 99 4X4 2500 OC. PM me around 7-20 after I put 6k on them going to Grand Canyon - so far have about 4 hundred - running 45f & 35r. They are load range D and got the pressures here on the TDR from others. If I have them @ 50f & 40r it's way too hard. My 265/75's @ 65f & 50r were softer.
