Guns, Bows, Shooting Sports, and Hunting Gun light

BIG! I would have loved to work on your Rifle! However, I no longer have a license nor the ability to make deadlines. The desire was certainly in my mind

;)Oo. ! Things are happening that are beyond my control. In the meantime, I just tinker when I can and hope I can build a few more;). It took me 3+ years to get that 1st . 308 together. The one for my Son was already assembled, albeit in pieces in my job cabinet. That still took a month just to bed it and recoat the stock. I made the stock many years ago. Thats a one year project around here, by itself:-laf!

Thanks for the ribbing:D!

Greg,

Outstanding! Love your pics and am jelous of your shop:-laf Your comment in the OP mentioned your wish to have EGA on the stock leads to the assumption that you are a Marine. Just curious, was your MOS 2112?

My eldest son (4th gen Marine) is currently a 2112 and is at the Precision Weapons Section, Weapons Training Bn at MCB Quantico (builds sniper rifles and the rifles & pistols for the USMC Shooting Team). I'm actually in the reverse of the father/son gun build. I'm currently buying . 308 components for Justin to build a rifle for me. My request is for a rifle that is as close to a USMC M40-A5 as possible (the guys at PWS are allowed to work on their own projects on their own time as long as they have a paper trail for the parts). He will be building four of them simultaneously, his, mine and one for each of his two brothers. I don't have pics of the build and probably won't but this is what it should look like when it's done...

USMC M40A5

This is a link to GA Precision, they do great work and Justin told me that at least a few of them are old 2112's that were trained in his shop. Will go with a Schmidt & Bender scope (as close to the USMC issue as possible) and will pay the FFL tax to get the supressor instead of just a flash hider like in the photo.

I can hardly wait Oo.

Semper Fi! Wes!

Yes! I served back in 1966-1970.

My MOS was 2532 Radio Relay Operator

By default a 2531 radio man on occasion.

All of us were 0311's:-laf!

My gunsmithing interest was developed as a kid.

The Corps did not see the need to develop my interests. Just what their critical need was at the time.

I went to Gunsmithing School after I was discharged from active duty.

I love to build and shoot them rifles! However, there are a couple of posters on TDR that are head and shoulders above my poor skills:cool:!

The rifle in your link looks like a real winner.

A Gary Schneider Barrel! They are also used by Tubb in his T2K match rifle built by McMillian Bros. . Good stuff there!

I went with a 1-11" twist in mine as a compromise twist which will still stabilize the 175 Gr. Sierra Match King in cold temperatures and still sling out the lightweights like the Barnes 130 TTSX at 3200 FPS for deer and coyotes:D!

Been thinking about a McMillan A-5 stock for another build down the line. Have to finish up a few rifles in the planning stage.

I would really like to build a . 300 WSM Varminter and an F/TR class rifle. Dont know what cartridge I would use for the F/TR rig, as yet. Probably the good old . 308 or even a . 30/06;).

Dont be jealous! You get to shoot more than I do:-laf!!!

Send Greetings to Your Son. SEMPER FI! Thanks for your Service! I know he loves his job! That is a requirement when building surgical tools for those that will use them in harms way!

Guess I didn't say but I was a 1341, Engineer Equip. Mechanic but shot well enough at the range that I got to shoot with the big boys at the Western Division Matches at Camp Pendleton (1976). Also got a secondary MOS of 8531, Marksmanship Instructor. I'm retired from the Wyoming Game & Fish Dept and now a Deputy Sheriff. Having fun still and I get to shoot a bunch of county ammo. Actually I mostly shoot my own reloads. When Justin finishes my rifle I'll see if the Sheriff will let me "qualify" with it so I can pack it around in my patrol truck ('09 Dodge 1500 - no Cummins ). If he wont I guess I'll just have to run for Sheriff so I can make my own rules :D.

As for your shop, I've been looking at lathes, mills, etc. and contemplating where to put them for when Justin retires from the Corps and comes back to Wyoming. (My wife thinks my boys and I should start up our own gun shop - I think she is a very intelligent individual and it's hard to find fault with her logic :-laf). I'm jelous because I know what you have there and the skill it takes to use them! I never got past the high school shop class level of expertise, you however appear to have mastered the art. That's a beautiful rifle. I'll bet your son is as excited as I am awaiting his!

You may want to check into the NRA rules for F-TR if you're going to compete with that rig you're thinking about building. Pretty sure it can only be a . 308 or a . 223 (or their respective mil. equivelants). The 30. 06 isn't allowed. I might be wrong and that rule may have been just for a certain match or a certain range, but that's what sticks in my feeble brain. However, if you're just making it for your own pleasure, what the heck, it's a great round!

Keep having fun!, Wes

That is no lie!! I like the layout of it!! I saw some of it when you showed me the pics of the backhoe bucket you were working on... . SHOP ENVY!!!

Man, you have a first class wife there!! Or sarcasm is lost on you..... Meh... Might as well think positive!! Mine thinks I'm crazy to get my FFL..... I may be. I already have paperwork a foot deep on my desk... . Too many irons in too many fires!!

You are correct on FTR. F Class Tactical Rifle has to be . 308Winchester or . 223 Remington chambered(mil spec accepted). Any combination of action, barrel, optics can be used up to the weight limit, which I believe is 18. 4 lbs... ... attached bipods are included in firearm weight... . no mechanical rests are allowed, only bags or bipods.....

F-O... . F Class Open category, you can shoot anything you want, . 308 caliber and under, as long as it's under class weight, 22 lbs, I think..... no muzzlebreaks, and you have to hit the target repeatedly with it..... I like the . 284 Winchester :D Mechanical rests can be used, and are not included in the weight, as long as they are not attached to the rifle. The Farley's work great in this class.....

That sounds like a great idea, GHarm!!! You can shoot FTR with Dad, and I'll take the . 243 or . 284 and shoot FO!! Say when and where!!! Capitan, Roswell, and Raton, NM are all good options, as I'm sure Dad will go anyway! :D How else can I prod you?

Thanks HH, For the PRODS:D!

HH, that shop where I was welding on the excavator bucket was not mine.

My shop is only 1080 square feet, with 12 foot ceilings. It was larger than my first house:-laf. But not industrial complex size with an overhead crane;)!

Wes, we should PM! Maybe we(Your Son, as well) could brainstorm together with HHhuntitall. HH is one of those with technical and business expertise, as well. A Gunsmith business would be an OUTSTANDING idea!

Getting quality equipment nowadays requires an extensive search.

But dont limit yourself to old used manual junk. One could make a career looking for just that right used lathe or mill deal and never cut a chip!

Thanks for the kind comments, Folks!
