$32 Oil Change

For those who have been paying $80 for oil changes... I was at a Walmart the other day and spied a beautiful '03 Cummins getting an oil change. I bumped into the owner and he said they he just asks for the basic oil change and they charge him an extra dollar or so for the extra quarts of oil. I asked him what kind of oil they were putting in and he said Rotella. Sure enough I saw them opening up individual bottles of Rotella and putting them in the truck. He said he thought they were putting in Fram oil filters.



Now I know that some of you will jump in and say the Walmart automotive people are incompetent (some are) but they are probably not any more incompetent than the dealer monkeys. Don't get me started on dealer service departments. Personally I change my own oil (Delo 400/Stratapore). This might be a viable alternative to the $80 oil change especially if you can watch them from a nearby vantage point. Anyway this is just some information that I thought I would pass along.

ive heard of this also. a buddy has an 01 psd and they only charge about $32. i couldnt believe it since it costs me that just for oil and a filter. i still prefer to do it myself though. last time i let a different shop work on my truck the door got messed up. that and being a master tech myself i cant see paying someone else to do my stuff.

Better get rid of that turd Fram oil filter immediately. Never use Fram filters on anything.

Fram filters are OK on a lawnmower engine, but that's about it! And an oil change for $32 is great, just bring your own Fleetguard!!! I do my own anyway with Redline, a little more than Rotella. And a lot of Quickie Lube places do not pre-fill the filter, which we all know is important!! Anybody know who makes the NAPA Gold Filters?? That's all I could find one time, now it has a Fleet on it

can always take in your filter AND they may even take off a couple of bucks...



I don't like the "wham bam thank you mam" of the quick change - I want more of the oil to drain - like at least 30 minutes - and that can't happen in a quick change place. Now I know they get 99. 99% and maybe more out - but I just feel better draining it a little more.

For $32. you could order the filters from Geno's and supply the filter to Wally World and still be way ahead of the $80. dealer charge, Sounds like a good deal to me.

Last time I asked, WIX is still making the NAPA Gold and the next cheaper filter they carry. WIX rated very high in construction and filtering last time I read up on them. I've used them for years in my gas engines.

Just had my done at Wally world. Took in my fleetguard filter and Mobil Delvac oil. Cost was $11. 50 for there labor. Pretty good I'm thinking. Had always change my own oil and filter till all the special req's on dumping used oil.

I do my own. Rotella and a Fleetguard costs me 24 bucks total.



No one but me is touching the drain plug in my oil pan. I was a mechanic for 12 years and changed way too many oil pans due to stripped threads from lube places.



Besides, I prefill my filter and that gives me a warm fuzzy fealing when I start it up.

Those darn Fram filters, used them for 400k before I found out how bad they were. 419k and the motor blew.

I had a neighbors kid who worked at Walmart oil pits, he was fired after his fifth, FIFTH time of not tightening the drain plug down enough, So much for them stripping the threads out.

I change my own oil in my own driveway with a 12 gauge, shovel, oil filter wrench and a cut off 50 gallon drum to catch the old oil in. I have a 1/4 turn drain plug valve on the pan. The oil then goes into my Shenandoah waste oil furnace to heat my house and garage.

(The shovel and 12 gauge is for the first EPA smuck or environmentalist that thinks they are going to ticket me for staining my own driveway on my own property)



I was told the bit about the 12 gauge and shovel by an old retired gentleman that lived down the street from me when I was stationed in San Diego. It has stuck with me to this day everytime I pop my hood. Funny ol' guy, wish you all could have met him, he'd have made most Environmentalists move out of the neighborhood. Or have a cemetary in his back yard. Hmm, his lawn was really uneven

I spent $123. 00 a couple of weeks ago on 4 qaurts of sinthetic gear oil,2 bottles of anti spin lub and a tube of silicone for my rear diff at the ******* ship. I brought my oil drain container there thinking i could dump it in there huge oil recycle tank then i can go home and do my rear diff. I asked the service department with my $123. 00 bag in my hand if they would let me dump my oil out in there recycle tank they said they i could not and gave me some stupid excuise :{ So i had to go to Kragen Auto parts and they were glad to let me dump it there. Sorry to hog your tread it just reminded me of it.

That's because Walmart contracts out their oil change centers to someone els and the owner doesn't want to deal with everyone who buys oil from Wally World which is a big mistake on their part to try pulling. Just for your knowledge next time, if a store sells oil, they have to by law take back the used oil you drained out. I am not sure if it is federal, but it has been the case in every state I have visited or lived in since 1998 or longer. Even Montana which is at the bottle of the barrel for environmental protection laws requires it.

I don't usually wait that long, but have noticed that removing the filter is cleaner if you wait over an hour. Less oil in the filter. What's wrong with Fram filters? They changed the filter that was causing the problems a few years back. The new ones have an "A" after the number. Do they not work as well as the others? If not, I'll switch. Thanks

The next time you change your oil, cut your Fram filter in half, the spring they use to keep the thing together is a bent piece of spring steel, kind of like a small scrap of sheetmetal. The element is crao as well. I thought it was not a big deal until years back I cut open a FRAM and a Fleetgard filter side by side to see for myself. Definite difference in quality. not to mention the Fram filters come apart and plug off the ports in the oil system, BOOM! no more engine. Stick to the Fleetguards, or similar filter, it isn't worth the risk as many have said before. I know of a few guys who grenaded their older dodges due to Fram filters, mostly from oil passage plugs and the filter spring wearing out too soon which lets the debris blowby to the pickup side ofthe filter.

I dump mine right in the fuel tank.
