Cummins is too good for a truck

A newspaper report on a new bus in the City of Seaside, OR (9 miles from here) claims that it has a 32 valve Cummins engine in a Freightliner chassis. Is that possible, ie a V8 Cummins?

More likely it is a Cat 3208.

I have an old truck manual from the late 60s early 70s that listed Cummins V8s and a few of the photos of the heads shown had 4 valves/cylinder.

Joesoot, the VT903 were v-8 with 4 valves/cyl. We used them over the road because of light weight. In my 15 yrs experience, we only had one failure before 400,000.

ACTUALLY THE 903'S WERE A FAIRLY DECENT ENGINE, not real fuel efficient, and the little V-8's, the 555's were a heck of a lot better than the 3208 Cat. :)

Dr Evil, actually we had pretty good luck for fuel mileage. When I quit hauling cattle, grossing 86-96,000, we were getting 5. 5 to 6 MPG regularly and I was happy with that.

My RoadBoss II was geared way too low, governed for 2500 RPM and 67 MPH, and I averaged about 4-1/4 to 4-1/2 MPG. We didn't have any kind of aero package on the tractor. We did have a Trans-Star II with an 8V-92 375 HP Detroit (turned down from about 430 HP stock) that only got about 3-1/2 MPG with the same usage. The S-2200 Binder with te 6V-92 & 9-spd RR, 308 HP woulkd get a little over 5 MPG. We always drove them pretty hard! Typical load was 45K, except when We got the good loads! Empty plastic weed killer jugs in the cardboard cartons, full 45 ft. trailer only held 8490 pounds of cargo but was completely full frt to back all the way to the roof! :)
