Well, I put the new spring in, breakover spring and had the breakover post welded. During the process I lost the top hat spring and replaced it with a genric one from the hardware store. The go pedal felt much softer I could blip the throttle and it would return to idle. Once I started driving the engine would get caught and stay at about 1700 to 2000 rpms. I could bring it back to idle by keeping it in gear and using the brakes to get the rpms down (I have a 5sp). I thought that maybe the top hat spring that I used was too weak and I replaced with a stronger one. I have the same symptoms only now I feel more engine vibration thru the pedal.

1) Is the softer pedal feel common?

2) What can I do to keep it from getting "hung up"?

Thanks in advance.

I'd say, first, do as sdstriper suggested, get the correct part in there. Second, or while you're waiting on the correct piece, back off your fuel screw a turn, see if that eliminates the hanging.

If you dropped the spring were did it go? :--)

Make sure you have your throttle return spring hooked back up. Should be from the front case/gear cover to the throttle some place. .

The spring hit me in the eye and I lost it. No, I'm lying about the first part and wish I was wrong about the second. Add it to the list of things in the back of my head to go down when the truck stops, "idle spring works out of corner of pump and destroys internals. " I used my hand vac and sucked out all the fuel I could to look. Damned if I know where it is now. :{

Pastor maybe you could put a note in the gov. spring thread that "you should have your index finger pressing on the top hat when you remove the old gov. spring. "

The engine was hanging at the 1800rpm range because the fuel screw was too far in (thanks Bill). I still have the lock collar on it from a rebuild and it made more smoke in stock form. I thought I had a lot more room to drive fuel screw in. :rolleyes:

after messing with my pump once (involving pump top removal) and struggling to get the top back on, i had terrible throttle response. putting a new spring in fixed it. the only thing i can think of is that i stretched the spring out while messing with the pump top.
