I put in the 3200 OMG spring today. However it doesn't seem quite right. I got the cover on the pump but found the lower throttle lever was not stopping against anything internally when I moved the top throttle arm to full fuel position. I could only feel the 3200rpm spring stretching when I went to full with the lever. Did I miss getting it in front of some lever or does the lower throttle lever not come up against resistance until the pump cavity pressure rises? At any rate I cannot get it to start at this point and have bled the injectors and have seen fuel come out behind the loosened injector nuts.

EDIT:Nothing wrong with the way I put things back together. I forgot i removed the high idle stop screw. There is nothing for the throttle to stop against. DUH.

The lower lever you are refering to, is it on the side of the pump? If so, it's the manual shutoff. Foward to run. You may have to reindex the throttle lever on the shaft. Did you watch the reference marks?
 
I found the starting problem. The procedure I had for the 3200 rpm spring installation said to back out the full fuel screw two full turns before trying to start the engine. I had this screw two full turns in from stock position as a result of previous adjustments. After the spring installation the engine would not start in the stock full fuel screw position. Just to see if I was too low on the full fuel screw postions I ran it back out again to my original postion. The truck started with no problem.

I did a test run down the road and found that I did not make any smoke but was now able to run up to 3000 rpm easily. Before I put the spring in, I was making more smoke. I'm wondering if I can turn up the fuel screw some more without going into runaway condition. Is it easy adjust close to this condition without the turbo hooked up to the intake and sitting in the garage?
 
Your asking if you can adjust the screw... ... ... with the engine setting in the garage? :confused:



Simply begin to turn the screw in a little at a time and work the throttle quickly. When you pull it toward WOT, allow it to snap back to slow idle quickly. The governor should be able to pull the rpm's down rather quickly.



Another method to test this adjustment is to slowly apply throttle towards the WOT position. The engine should not take off and run-up on it's own.
 
Thanks Greenleaf. Yes, truck setting in garage. I'll try that tomorrow. Interesting thing at this point boost is much lower than before I put the spring in.
 
Becasue you moved the location of the fuel screw... ..... right?



It will not net moor boost with the spring alone, but will fuel longer... ... ... ...
 
Yes I removed the fuel screw in order to get the top back on the pump. When I put the fuel screw back in I tried to leave it about two turns out; just by looking at the number of exposed clean threads. At this point it drives like it lacks a little bit of mid-range acceleration.

I have some tire sizes picked out that require that I can get good pulling and decent accel. in the 1750 to 1900 rpm range while pulling 5,000# down the highway. I have not tried to pull the boat yet since I got the pump properly advanced. Do you think i can pull in that RPM? Up till now I've had to run at 2,000-2400 when pulling.

I have absolutely ZERO clue when it comes to gearing/tire size etc. I simply go with whatever the factory gave me. In terms of big trucks and buses..... There is never any reason to change that stuff so I never mess 'round with it. I rebuild transmissions (Eaton Fuller Twin Shafts) and differentials but never mess w/the gear ratio.



I know there are tons of guys out there that are never happy and swap out tire size/diff gears etc. more than I'll change my underpants. You need to talk w/them. I'm perfectly happy to set in my Lazy Boy and read the paper as opposed to lying on my back pulling a set of diff gears to see if I can lower the rpm's.



Listening to guys talk gearing/rpm's is a lot like listening to Charlie Brown's school teacher.
 
Wow, I hit a nerve there. Let's leave the underpants out of this. That's an overshare of information. :D . Anyway Scott, I go tmy answer after I turned up the fuel and ran the truck. It will be fine at almost any RPM I run at. I was amazed how i could run in my overdrive gear now at a very low RPM (~ 1300 rpm)and not lug the engine. I'd really like to Dyno this 4BT beast now and see what it's making. Up to 26 psi boost now. That's about 56 H. P. more than I was making the day before assuming about 7 hp/psi on a 4BT. Hell, I think I can put a camper on the truck and tow the boat now. :D . Just need some E load tires and a little air in the bags.
