I am looking at an '03 SRW 3500 at a local car lot - they are asking 32K$ for it.

The truck appears to be in excellent condition; has HO engine/6 spd, SLT trim with power everything, 35K miles, spray-in liner, and turnover gooseneck hitch There is one small hole in the driver's seat back, but other than that the truck is very clean.

I am thinking the price should be more in the 27-29K$ range - anyone want to offer an opinion?

You should be able to get a new '05 SLT for close to that. Right now it's kind of a sellers market for heavy duty used diesel trucks but you can get good deals on new ones.

Mine went out the door for $32,700 (no tax) new, so that sounds a little on the high side. This is the end of the 05 model year and there should be some good rebates out there, I think you should look into that before buying a truck that is soon to be 3 years old (based on model year).

FWIW I have always been a little anal myself about buying a used vehicle off the used lot. There may be nothing what so ever wrong with it, but I'm real particular with maintence myself. Another words some people trade every couple of years, and could care less how they treat or maintain there vehicle, since they plan to trade it off. My neighbor is a perfect example of this I would not have wanted his 03 he traded in for his 05 here a couple of months ago. I would consider a new one or find a individual selling his that had good records on the truck along with you being able to talk to him and getting a more personal history of the vehicle in person. JMHO!

I, also, think that price is very high.

I bought my '03, HO, 6-sp, 4X4, QC, with a fair amount of stuff on it, including side airbags and the fold down rear floor, for the back seat area.

BTW, if you get a truck, make sure it has the fold down, flat floor, in the rear seat area. It's $100. 00 extra, if you order it on the truck or the truck comes with it. If you decide you want it after you purchase the truck, it's $1100. 00.

Back to the truck pricing. I paid $30,695. 00 + tax, license, DOC fees. Out the door, the total price was $33,916. 70. Later on, they discovered they had overcharged me on the license fees and sent me back around $22. 00.

You might want to check The Kelly Blue Book or Edmunds for pricing. You might have a better idea of what the dealer paid for that '03.

Recently, I read a post by a car salesman that basically said that if you wait til the end of the month, you can get a better deal. Every month, they have to pay interest to keep each vehicle on their lot. if they can get rid of it before the new month starts, they don't incur that charge. You are now pretty close to the end of the month.

There was an interesting thread on here or the Diesel Truck Resource.com about truck pricing and who was giving the best deals. There were some dealers in Texas and Chapprell Dodge, in ADA, OK. that were giving good deals. If you are a member of the Farm Bureau, you can get an extra $500 off the price. Check for the available rebates from Dodge. Check retail and Wholesale prices from Kelly B. B. and Edmunds. Then start shopping.

Remember, you will also have a warranty with the new truck.

Good Luck & good shopping.

It sounds like a nice truck. The hitch is worth $1000 if you need it. I'd try to get it for around 25-27k. Also, look at new trucks. You should be able to buy at or below invoice. Tommygun sells to TDR members at about $1000 below invoice. He has many happy members here.

You may want to check on page 4 of this forum "What's your best deal on a new truck?".

Might be some interesting reading that may help you out with your purchase.

Also,

you can check the NADA or Blue b ook price on line.

Not sure if the hitch is a positive. It might indicate some heavy use.

Paid $34,200 for a brand new 05 and mine is a Laramie.

I would never buy a truck with a trailer hitch already installed... especially not one of these where the way it has to be installed is VERY specific.

You're looking at a $25,000-26,000 truck. I looked at a used one and couldn't touch it for less than 30,500... so obviously I walked, and I'm so glad I got a new truck. I got EVERY option I wanted, and NOTHING I didn't want, the exact color I wanted, etc. To me that was priceless... and it didn't cost any more.

18 miles on it when I got it, too.

Price seems a little high on that 03, but 03 is a better truck (emissions, etc) a 04. 5 and up truck. 03, early 04 are the 3rd gen gems. Keep looking and you will find one.

That price is a bit high. Yet, the dealer will most likely get someone to pay it due to the fact that alot of people think that they have to pay "sticker' price for any new truck. The sticker on my 04. 5 was $42k and after all the rebates and a few hours of haggle, I got it out the door at just under $33K (no sales tax in Oregon) and that included the D/C 7/100k 0 deduct warranty.

I suggest that you shop around. With the new body of the Mega cab on its way, there are alot of 05's on dealer lots that need to be sold. Your best deal can be had on the last few days of the month.

Good luck.

You're kidding yourself if you really believe that. Nearly all the known bugs seem to be worked out of these trucks now. While I'd prefer not to have a catlytic converter, I wouldn't pay a premium for a used truck because it didn't have one. They also have significantly less power from the factory.

That seems a little on the high side. Heck, if someone offered me 29k for my 4wd 03 HO 6spd 3500 I'd take it, it even has a jacobs exhaust brake, kore suspension, MTR's, spray in bed liner, gauges 40k miles etc etc etc so 32k might be a lil high for that truck

Been lookin' at Tundra d-cabs for a while then heard about the Mega -cab so gonna hold tight for now. As far as buying new verses used, most of the time the difference is nearly made up on the better interest rates for a new car loan verses used. All depends on what we "think" we need,we'll use in-cab room more now than a long bed. 'Cause we're Grammy an' Pop now! Mike

03 is still a "new" vehicle until the 06s hit the streets for financing purposes. Loan % had nothing to do with my selection of buying a new truck.

Buy NEW! Mine, fully loaded listed at 44,960. 00, picked up for 35K, and with the incentives now, you should be able to do better with new. Call Tomeygun or Butch at Dishman Dodge. Sorry Tomeygun, don't see the humor.
