I have a chance to buy a BD 330 HP fuel plate at an attractive price, but I have some questions for those who might have a similar plate.

1 Can I slide this back to approximate the 280 plate? How far back would this be?

2 A while back I saw in a thread that some plates cause a strange power curve. Good off idle, so-so mid band, then good top end. The cause (if memory serves me) is that the cam plate doesnt contact the portion of the injection pump properly. (or something like that:D ) Will/does this plate do this, or is it cut "properly"? I suspect it is, as (again if memory serves me) Piers wrote this thread.

3 I plan on the 370 injectors at a later date. Would this be compatible?

4 would my stock cluch live with this plate slid back?

I do tow on occasion. I'd also like to do the governor spring kit, at a later date, and bump the timing up a little.

TIA

Eric

If this plate is the one I believe it is, no you cannot approximate the 280 hp plate because the mid range power will be too high even when you push it back some. Definitely will need a stronger clutch with it and smoke control is iffy because of the added mid range fueling for high torque. Also egt will be high requiring the 16 cm2 exhaust housing at a minimum. Its a good plate for power, however.

My dad has the 330 HP #10 cam plate in his 97 Dodge. It is set slightly back from the stock position, but is othewise bone stock including muffler and cat. It has good power all the way through but lots of bottom end. He will only slip his stock clutch under heavy acceleration below 1750 rpm while towing. Ifyou set the plate all the way back you will probably be fine if you watch your rpms.

My truck on the other hand has the same #10 plate set slightly ahead of stock position with 300 inj. , 5" exh. , piers put a governor kit in and with a ceramic clutch I had enough power to break an input shaft (stock clutch definately will be fried)I would recommend that plate as a starting piont as long as you plan on a clutch beore moving the plate forward.

Thanks Garry. I know I will need a cluch, but I'd like to get a few more miles out of this one before getting into that.

Piers e mailed me a reply. He said that if I put the #8 plate back about . 030, it should be about 300 hp with my truck.

I do want the added mid range. I feel this is where my truck is the most sluggish.

Eh... decisions decisions. I could get this plate for $200. 00. I dont know if I should get it, or get the #10 new. I am mechanically inclined, but I like the idea of a video with the new (#10) plate. Sometimes actually seeing things is worth much more than a thousand words.

Eric,

I dont know about a video but I can say the shape of the grind on the cam plate is very straight forward it is a "v" right in the centre (no fancy curves to it). I peviously had a #11(280hp). It had a lot more curves to it and less bottom end. My friend Dan has a #10 and has filed out a few extra HP himself its an easy shape to work with in my opinion and Im not a mechanic,

Garry.

I just swapped my #11 plate for a #10. Also installed the 16cm housing. I previously installed a K&N filter in the stock box, removed the snorkle and drilled a 2" hole in the box. Also lost muffy and cat. My stock clutch can't handle the power now. My big problem is the EGTs. I had a diesel shop set the timing around 15 degrees this wed. , run the rack, etc. I let the guy take it out and run it afterwards. I told him a head of time I don't like going over 1300 degrees. I had a tight schedule so when he came back I jumped in and headed out. I checked the peak EGT on the SPA gauge and he hit 1550 degrees! I hope nothing was hurt inside. What can I do to drop the EGTs? 4" exhaust? The 0880 (?) K&N, Psychotty (I don't like the idea of cutting holes in my truck). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Gene

I wouldnt worry about a moment at 1550.

What you mentioned should lower the temps, also propane.

If I was you, I'd check your boost lines for leaks. I dont think you should be getting temps this high. Maybe if you'd move the plate back a bit?

JMO.
