If letting off the accelerator doesn't at least reduce the vibration I would bet the carden joint on the front drive shaft. Jump under there and rotate each shaft by hand, unless they are in a position where a bad joint is bound they will show play if bad.
Damn you guys, ya had to bring up u-joints, I was almost done being peed off at my u-joint/carden joint problems from last summer now reading these posts I can feel my blood boil. The u-joints in these trucks remind me of the injectors in these trucks, JUNK pure JUNK.
DPK, when my carden went it wasn't possible to tell where the sound was comeing from. Oh yeah my carden joint showed the most play by pushing up on the shaft as opposed to rotating the shaft with the wheels on the ground.
Yep, check it in one spot , then move the truck a bit to put the shaft in a different position and check again. What was easy to diagnose the old fashioned way does not seem to apply to these 3 rd gen trucks at all.
I have replaced mine (though it is a single piece drive shaft) with a spicer unit. A die grinder on the inside of the housing will allieviate the clearance issue and allow you to install a spicer unit. I have over 100,000 miles on the spicer.
Driveline shop I've used in the past really frowned on this grinding on the housing deal. Said at very least need to re balance the assy but worried about strength reduction. Said it was best to use what fits correctly.
