Well, it was bound to happen eventually... After thirty thousand plus miles of problem free driving, I had a major breakdown. The truck, not me. :) It seems a little soon to have problems like a fuel injection pump, but all was covered under warranty. I was cruising home from Vegas at about 80 when the truck just plain stopped running... Almost like someone had flipped a switch. I was towed back to Barstow, and after some excitement with reimbursable travel costs from Chrysler, the truck got a new VP44 and I was on my way. Here are the questions...

I know that Bosch has made some changes in the design of the VP44 and understand that all of the pumps being shipped for warranty repair are rebuilds. My question is, what changes were made? The truck is noticably noisier.

My other question is what should I check on the truck since my 36K warranty is nearly up. I intend on having them fix all of the ticky tack stuff I can find. Console tabs, underdash squeak, blower motor is vibrating, mirror noise, etc. Are there any things that you would advise me check? I plan on giving the truck a pretty thorough once over just prior to the expiration, but it would be nice to know the hot spots to check.

Thanks for all of your help. You are all invaluable in your help of one another.

Gages

Do you have gages yet? It's been said over and over on here to install boost, pyro. ,and fuel pressure gages. Did the dealer check lift pump pressure?Might want to at least install a temporary gage to check it. You don't want to have to replace that V. P. 44 out of your own pocket next time. Gages are a lot cheaper than an inj. pump or an engine :( . Doug

I do have both, EGT and Boost gauges. I can't remember for certain whether or not they checked the lift pump pressure. I'll be sure to check that myself as soon as possible.

I had great luck with my trucks fuel systems(other than the gauge/control unit problems on my 99). I replace my fuel filter every 5 to 7 thousand miles. All parts are not created equal. I think our pumps are covered for 100,000 miles. Don't use some of those funky fuel mixtures. I should knock on wood. I wonder why it is noiser now? That might concern me. Good luck.

At 33K miles you are probably due for a trackbar. Get the TSB from Fritz's site and check it. The front end was gone on mine at 35K miles, new just about everything was needed, all but the axle it seems like. Complain to the dealer that you have excessive play in the wheel and that it wanders a lot. Hope this helps.
