Well server seems to be holding up well. This pretty much smashes the previous amount of users online... that I remember (309)

Do I hear 350?

Last peak I remember was 309?

Wonder why so many people are online... ... ... 400 come and gone.

This is very reassuring to see the servers keeping up rather well.

Explanation - the traffic level isn't going through the roof like it looks. We looked at some competing sites today and checked what the refresh rate of their who's online list were set at. Out of curiousity we changed our refresh rate to the same length of time (an hour and a half) to get an accurate comparison of the traffic difference. Tomorrow I will be changing the refresh rate back to what we consider a more accurate length of time for our purposes. So what you are seeing right now is the number of users that have been on the forums in the last hour and a half.

We hit 634 users that were logged on between 8:55 and 10:25pm eastern time. It was an interesting exercise, we learned a lot. I've reset it back to the 304 max users that it was at before and the setting is back to normal.

But Steve why not leave it as an all time high? The "Other" forums say we are "Light" with little activity ... . We can't have that on our #1 Turbo diesel resource Resume now can we :D

Because it would be a LONG time before we'd set a new record. We'd rather be honest about the traffic levels we have - no need to embelish it.

Some of those numbers can be a little misleading. I allways notice at the top of the forum it lists who is currently on that particlar forum. There never seems to be as many people as compared to who is signed on. For the heck of it I added up the names who were currently on the top of each forum and got a total of 48 as compared to 149 logged on users. I shows that a lot of users forget to sign off. Sometimes I just don't have anything better to do with my time:)

A few things there Leon. One, guests obviously don't show up on the list of users. Two, users can choose to be invisible and they still show up as members in the count but don't show up on the user list. Three, people only show up at the top of a forum if they have gotten to the forum thread list in the last minute or so. Many people browse the forum by using the new threads option so they never show up on those lists. The software counts people as logged in until they haven't had activity for a set period of time. The reason for that is for the exact reason you state - many people don't log off. Even if they don't log off if they don't have any activity for a set period of time then they are no longer counted. That's why we tried that experiment. I went to some competing sites and by having someone else log in as me and then log off the internet I watched to see how long I was still shown as being online on that site. Then I changed our setting to that to compare.
