35" tire or the next size down?

I have a 05 4x4 which just turned over 4000 miles. I work in a mine so I don't drive it to work. I put 35" (34. 8") pro-comp tires on stock wheels at 1500 miles. They look great but they rub at full turn and the mpg is terrible. I'm thinking about going to the next size down for better fuel mileage or will that help the mileage that much? The 285/70/17 looks to small. What would be good size to go with for better mileage and still look good? Thanks
