35" tires and 3.73 gears?

I have a 6 speed and I love the 35s. The truck accelerates quicker with the 35s than it does with the stock tires. The engine speed is more in its sweet range and it doesn't run out of rpms on each shift. Of course I usually only run it up to about 2,000 between shifts for normal driving.



I still find myself looking for 7th gear often though.

I have a slightly modded 48re and 315/70's I love the combination. I did notice about 1/2 mpg difference. The stock tires are way to small for the torque in these trucks. Every new truck I see with any miles has way more wear on the back tire than front. The change to the BFG's solved this problem. I now have 40,000 miles on the set on my truck and still have another 20,000 left in them.

I have exactly this combo and love it. I ran 33" with no engine mods and saw no issues. With 35" and any chip you'll be well beyond stock and not see any downside. Your auto will suck away a little more power so some power mods will be welcome.

The dealer had to reflash the computer awhile after it replaced the tires because the change did mess up the computer an the speedo did not work and some of the gauges did not work either but after the reflash it was fine. just seemed strange that the computer put up with the change for at least a year before acting up.

Got a question for everyone. I will be upgrading to 35" tires in the future and I currently have 3. 73 gearing. Is anyone running this combo and if so, how do you like it? I'm hoping that I won't need to switch to 4. 10's anytime soon. Luckily, I'm not towing over 8500 or so and I do that only on occasion. If you are running that combo, could you tell a difference in power or mileage? I'm currently running 33" tires in an aggresive tread pattern already so I'm curious if I am going to notice any difference (other than handling) especially with the torque our CTD's are putting out anyway. Any info would help here.

Here's the deal for all of us with bigger tires and wheels, I just installed 22. 5" Alcoas with Yokohama 255-70R22. 5 ( tire height is approx. 36. 3" ) tires and needless to say my speedo was way off!

Went to the Dealer and it took about 10 minutes the tech plugged in to the port under the dash and set the tire revolutions per mile to the specs per Yokohama for my tires, Apparently our speedometer is set by tire revolutions per mile per tire mfg. specs. and my new tires spec. out 571 rev. per mile and the old tires were set at 674 revolutions per mile.

Now when I started asking questions the tech did say some years and models of our trucks are different as in the max tire diameter or rev. per mile that the computer will let you enter, he said the 03 can do about anything ( I guess I lucked out being an 03) He did say one possible side affect on some trucks when they reset speedo the ABS light stays on til about 20 mph. but I had no issues.

So for all you running 35" tires go to the tire mfg website and find out the rev. per mile and go to the dealer

P. S. Only cost me 30. 00 Alot less than a speeding ticket for guessing how far off speedo is and find out from police that I figured wrong

And I cant wait to see what my Hwy mileage is now...

I just wanted to revive this thread and get some more input from everybody here. I'm just a few short weeks from making the decision to stick with the 33" tires or go 35". I know there are quite a few 48RE owners out there with 35's and 3. 73 gears...

Second truck now with 35" tires. Both trucks third gen. cummins/48re w/3. 73 gears. Like the 35s a lot. You do lose some power off the line, but I do think the tires will last a little longer (taking away a little bit of torque. ) Freeway trips get a little better mileage. But my trucks were both lifted 3" in front by KORE, so wind is hurting aerodynamics a little bit.



I don't think you will mind the 35" 3. 73 combo.

The combination of the leveled Ram and 35" tires looks AWESOME!! On the 17 inch rims the tires don't look like they are 35 inchers.



Milage hand calcs out to 18. 3 hiway and 15. 7 city under 50.

Bob, what man would not like two more inches I loved the 35's and 3:73. I don't tow anything to heavy (Jeeps,quads, boat). The 35's handle and tow so much better than the 37's and 3:73 I have now. If my Mega Cab did not look so stupid with 35's on it I would have them on it with no gear change. It needs 40 inchers to make the huge cab look good IMO.

I'm regretting the 285's and NOT doing the 315's and a leveling kit on my MC... I suppose in 40,000 miles I will need new shocks, front end alignment, leveling kit and new tires anyway... that will make the truck "NEW" again...



UPON further revue, PRO-COMP's HD billet rims and E rated 35/13. 5/18 Extreme AT's would be a nice upgrade..... BJ

It seems like everybody thinks the bigger tires help mileage numbers, but I think it actually stays the same if not drops just slightly.

It certainly looks better than stock and maybe ground clearance is slightly improved. (stock tires sucked on mine so traction, especially in snow, is MUCH better)

Went to 35's on my 06 with the 6 sp and 3. 73's. Highway milage went up about 1 mpg. This is adding the the extra milage that the odo is off due to the tire size change. The milage on 6 speeds will go up on the highway due to the reduced rpms, especially cruising at 75-80mph. I see about a 200 rpm decrease at 80mph. 2700 rpm on our trucks at 80 mph is too high. I like 2500 alot more with the new tires, plus the reduced milage numbers on the odo!
