Off the line with that trailer is a little mushy, but add more throttle and it wakes right up. I can't complain at all. I guess I'm lucky here in Montana. Even on the two lane roads, the speed limit is 70, and the cops won't even look at you if you're doing 75. Interstate speed limit is 75, and you can typically run 80. I have noticed that I can hold 70 a lot easier than I can hold 60.

I have 35"s with 4:10's and hate it. Yea, it's good off the line when towing, but once you're up to speed is when it counts. Just wish my RPM's were a little lower when cruising down the freeway (with or without a trailer). My RPM's now are exactly what a stock CTD runs that has 3:73's. But most of my driving is freeway without a trailer. Just wish it was better, that's all.

I'm running 37's and a 6inch lift kit with 3. 73's and I like it most of the time. My only problem is getting a load moving, but more of that is due to axle wrap than gearing. Oh my load is over 14k so I tow heavier than I should. If I had it to do over again, I'd run 4. 10's, and I'd still be better rpm wise than a stock 3. 73 truck, but I'm also talking a 2inch taller tire than your asking. So I guess to answer your question 35's with 3. 73s should be great. I would think that would be an ideal combination. Of course I have a few addons to help move the rig ;)

This may be kind of a dumb question, but what is SO bad about pulling a hill with a trailer and having to shift out of OD??? I even downshift pulling hills, and its no big deal. Let the engine run up to about 2400- 2500 rpms, its ok, you hurt it.

I still say it's a mistake after what I went through, but Matt is right. It really depends on the type of roads you drive. I drive a lot of 2 lane roads through rolling hills and the speed limit is 55. It's common to get behind someone doing less than that. At 55 if I remember right, I was at approx 1250 rpms and in OD. Thats too low for these trucks, as is anything under 1500 IMO. It drove me crazy because I KNEW I was bogging the motor and killing the transmission and wasting fuel. If I were driving at higher speeds (above 65) I would have been more open to keeping that setup. If you get them, report back.

What is POWER?

I am glad GOD made us all different. I luv my 2004. 5 CTD 4. 10/315s. When I pull any grade in high gear torque converter locked and can increase in speed with little petal, I consider that POWER!!! :p

Quick question for the guys who are running 35" tires. Currently my truck is bone stock, however, I plan a few mods. Top of the list is putting on a set of 35" tires, but I have 373's..... Am I going to have problems? I know 410's would be better, but any feedback you may have would be much appreciated. One last question..... What is the largest tire I can run on my stock truck and rims? I have an 03' 555HO, 4x4, auto, short bed. :)

Had 35's on my 2000 RC LWB 5-speed. With the TST Powermax2 it ran just great! A little slow on the take off but once it was rolling it was just fine. Oo. I did toast the stock clutch at about 35k but replaced it with an aftermartket one from TST and it was fine after that up until I sold it at about 80k. The 35's rubbed the front suspension a little bit when turning though.

Is that a Scarab?? If so it looks like a 38 which makes us a tie. But I guess your beds longer so you win :-{} :-laf :D

Here we go again. . I guess that 345hp Hemi woulda done a better job than my little 235 Cummins. Shoulda bought that Hemi. :-laf

Actually, if you had some way to keep it at the horsepower peak ALL the time, and it was geared to use it, yes, it would.

In the REAL world, we need all that torque to get the load moving at low RPM because there isn't enough horsepower at that RPM to do any reasonable amount of work.

HP is a measurement of torque over a time constant. Torque without HP useless. HP without torque is impossible. At peak HP the engine is capable of performing the most amount of work. Ever see a generator? Does it run at 1600 RPM, or 2500 RPM to produce the most power? I can name numerous examples, but peak torque is just a number for efficiency. Peak HP is where the most work can be accomplished at the highest rate.

Thats easy, both trucks with 6 speeds to pick the gear needed to keep the RPM's at peak HP as you say and both trucks loaded the same (heavy) and both trucks enter a steep hill at the same time. .

You are saying the Hemi will out perform in the climb vs the lower HP CTD?
