Allison transmission

I got stuck!

If it is not that engine it will be close to it that is introduced about midyear 03. I have not heard what transmission will be behind it, but am guessing it will be a 6 speed manual for the first year anyway. Ford is going for the title on HP again, and looks like they will get it at 325+. Save the "Cummins is better yada yada", just pointing out that it is coming and it will be strong.

Let's hope DC doesn't drop the ball when it's time to compete with Ford. I think the first important test will be whether or not we get a real crew cab in '03 on the heavies... rather than the dinky thing on the '02 1500's.

I hope Cummins can keep up! I think that the new quiet engines are going to be a joke...

HLA-system LOL I am keeping my old trucks as long as I can. Then when they get real old, I might think of installing a Hydraulic Launch Assist System :D

Sounds like a lot of gadgets and extra crap... ... so underneath it all I just have one question... "Where's the truck?" I get a kick out of their claim as the best V8 diesel in the industry... . no mention at all of the Cummins. Maybe they know they can't compete with it? How about those hydralic cam followers? No valve adjustments, but how long are they going to last in a HD application? In addition, this thing is just plain UGLY! It should have a license plate that reads "EYESORE"! I get a kick out of them using the name Tonka on it. Evidently they have to use that name to sell it and the truck can't stand on it's own merits? Must be a real "Toy" and not a real truck. Looks like the Phord dealer won't have to worry about me stopping in!

4020, do you mean where's the truck that outsells the Dodge diesel 10 to 1? I suppose you thought the power wagon concept vehicle was the greatest thing in the world? mmmmmm?

"transmission has all solenoids replacing the valve body, etc. " ?????

Great. That's just great. I work with failed solenoids every day. All different brands, many different applications, in automated factory machinery, mainly for air and hydraulic controls. I have yet to see any kind of a solenoid that will last long enough.

That one thing alone would keep me from buying a vehicle equipped with such a transmission. At least until it had been sold to enough guinea pig consumers for the first two years, and proved it could last.

The 03 Fords will have an all new 5 speed auto as mentioned in the original post. The first ones are suppose to be rated at 600ftlbs with another one rated at 650 soon after. The "new" Cummins is suppose to be over 300HP as well with an all new auto. The actual outputs will probably be the last thing that gets let out on these new powerplants. The last I have read had the Ford at 310 and the Cummins at 305. Both had torque levels around 575. That could all change, but not by much. I wonder what the GM guys have up their sleeves for increased power... I am sure they want to continue their media blitz with "the most powerful diesel engine"... HP that is. If the power levels hold they will have the largest engine by 10% with the least amount of power. It will be nice to see the PSD and the Cummins virtually the same size. One will be all new and the other will have a completely new fueling system... I wonder how the BOMBING market will do? Ford and Dodge are going to be trying to really figure out a way to put an end to this stuff. There sure doesn't seem to be many options that work on the Dmax's..... without sending the trucks home in a limp mode... CJ

One of the main problems with turning up the DMax is the POS Allison that is behind it. I've experieced problems several times while turning up a DMax. Seems the transmission doesn't like the added power. There is a torque sensor in the Allison, and if it reads too high, the result is limp-home mode. Plus, the Allison has been having torque converter problems--the TC bolts have a tendency to back out after a period of time.

Since there's so few of the ZF equipped DMaxes out there, it is hard to tell how it is holding up with the DMax... Time will tell.

Glad I got the most problem-free truck available... A Cummins with a manula trans. Doesn't get any better than that.

Bold Statment Evan

Evan,

I love the way my truck runs too, but that is bold to go out there and say that your truck is the most problem-free one out there :D I know that with my luck it doesn't matter what I drive or how I take care of it, the day I talk it up is the day it doesn't start or I ride home in a wrecker..... Ha ha just kidding LOL :D

But seriously..... did it start today :) :p

Evan

Rokay, ha ha... . I know you work on your stuff, so I thought that would earn a good response :D

BTW: I checked my truck for boost leaks where you said and sealed up the boost gauge and AFC pick-up's with teflon, I am going to see what the deal is now. Thanks for the housing, my truck runs like a top! Next is valves and may be a lift pump ;)

Thats an ugly truck! Kinda goes along with the Chevy Avalanche in looks. Will take some getting used to before I would even consider driving something like that.
