Thanks Mark, it's always good to hear positive things about a company and how they treat their customer's. As I said earlier, it sure surprised me a company like AARP with Hartford would not cover a 1ton truck for personal use.

Insurance

NOT dumping on State Farm, when my wife and I retired 5 years ago and started full timing in the RV, State Farm dumped us like a hot rock and that's after 30 years with the company(house and vehicles). They would not insure full timers then, don't know about now, but will not go back to them anyway.

SRehburg-I am an insurance agent in Colorado-an Independent agent, not some guy that sells only one product. I would encourage you to speak to an independent agent, simply because he has choice . He doesn't work for an insurance company, he works for YOU! There's a huge difference. Most have contracts with many insurance companies, and so are able to shop and match coverage with price and needs. An independent would have no problem insuring your vehicles, most likely with high quality, good service, and lower price. FWIW Bruce

Bruce, thanks for the suggestion, I have been getting telephone ear talking with all these companies. The quotes/service are all over the place. State Farm didn't come close to some others, they ran over $1000 higher than a couple of companies for our home and cars.

Another WAWANESA...

I am also 34 and have had them since I was 15(driver's permit). My father had a '90 dually with them. I currently have my '95 ram and 97 suburban, two '60's vw bugs and a fifth wheel with them, its $1300 per year. Back in '93, my toyota truck was totaled by a driver who ran a red light. They paid off my truck and gave me un/underinsured coverage after I sued the other person for the max of her policy limits. My wife had an accident with a person who had stolen a car, Wawanesa paid for the repair. I am very pleased with their service for the last 19 years.

I'll try Nationwide as well; I didn't try them yet. Wawanesa is sending me a quote by mail, they wouldn't give me a number over the phone. I tried to get a homeowner's quote through them, but they refused due to the plumbing in the house (galvanized). So much for homeowner's with them. I haven't been able to even drive my truck due to waiting for replies, that sucks. :)

Hmmmmmmm when I moved to Arizona,

My insurance rates went from $850 a year for my 05 3500 dually to $1900 a year.

The reason California Casualty said it went that high was the "illegal's " in the area. I explained I came from the san francisco bay area which is about a bad an area one can possibly drive in.

Apparently the Illegal's here drive worse..... I changed companies and got the rate down to 1100 a year.

I have m 3500 4x4 QC insured with Allstate. NO problems at all. My coverage is full with zero deductables. They are charging me $370 every 6 months and that is with having a teenage driver on the policy! With what you are saying about the AARP hartford policy, now I know why they couldn't give me a quote on line the other night. I was told that I would receive a letter in the mail within 30 days regarding my request. I thought they didn't like the idea of a Corvette in my garage. I have it insured with Hagerty for $270 a year! Good luck. I would give allstate a try. I have had great service with them for over 25 years on my daily drivers

I was told by one insurance company that the higher rates quoted in California was directly due to the 35%+ of the population in Southern Calif. is uninsured, so the costs are spread to all policy holders. Sad, but probably is an accurate statement; other companies probably just don't mention it. It gives a good argument for paying for insurance at the pump, that way no one drives uninsured. That's another issue.

I have a call in to Allstate for a quote, but the person was out this afternoon that could help me. They took all the info, so hopefully I'll hear tomorrow. I insured my Model A Ford coupe with J. C. Taylor Co. who was cheaper than Haggerty, have you tried them? Zero deductible and the premium is really reasonable.

I noticed the 3rd gen 3500s only have a 9900 lb GVW. Maybe this is why. If you were ever in the military, you can try USAA Insurance. They're very selective on who they insure but have great service.

I was in the military so I could look to see if USAA is in California; seems a few companies that use to be here left for one reason or another. Sounds like the 3rd gen truck 9900lb GVWR is for the SRW model. It would definetly qualify with AARP.

James, I just went to the USAA site and they have a couple of questions they ask for elgibilitiy. Even though I was in, they say I am not elgible. Were you able to obtain insurance? Perhaps I've been out to long, I'm a Viet Vet.

I use to think that USAA was the best (I live in Kalifornia) until my wife was hit by an uninsured motorist in my old BMW. They were unethical in the beginning saying that we should claim neck injuries saying that the other insurance company would then fix my car any way that I wanted it. Then, when they found out there was not another insurance company, their whole story changed. They totaled my car saying that they will not fix a 1983 vehicle regardless of the damage. I replaced the fender, hood, and repainted the front end so now I am driving a perfectly good car again with a salvage title. Thanks USAA! I dropped them immediately! I think at one time they were a very good insurance company, but now they are into every kind of business you can think of (i. e. credit cards, etc. ).

I now have 7-cars, slide-in camper, and two homes insured with Allstate so that I can have the umbrella policy (the 2001 dually w/camper comes to $361/6-months). Funny thing was that Allstate said, "oh, you just have the six-banger. " :D They also wanted to know if my 1946 Willy's had air bags. Insurance companies will be great to you unless you have to make a claim. :{ I've also heard good things about Farmers. Also, try the California Department of Insurance Agency website (it's a .gov site) for a great comparison in auto/home insurance.

I appreciate the heads up, but wonder is a lot of the insurance companies would "cut and run" when it becomes THEIR loss? It sounds like your car wasn't that severly damaged, strange they would total it out. I don't need that type of response when I file a claim (hopefully never). I do think however, they all look at low Blue Book for value vs. loss.

I have USAA and they did a great job when my old Chevy was broken into. They gave me replacment value for the aftermarket stereo system and I had the check within a few days. They have no problem with my current truck but it is a 3500 SRW (9900 GVW). I personally think most insurance companies would have totaled out a 20 year old BMW just due to the cost of parts for it. Any company is going to total a vehicle if that is cheaper than repairing it.

I tried GMAC who also underwrites for Camping World and Good Sam. They were to pricey for what I needed but I was lucky AARP (Hartford) made an exception for my 3500, so I stayed with them.

I appreciate all the replies and I have two full sheets of companies I've checked with. The quotes varied by a high of $3200 to a low of $1500. Big difference for same coverage! To get the low, I had to insure my cars through one company and the house through another, but figured it was better to stay with one.
