3500 Mileage

Hey all I have another mileage question...



I have an 2007 2500 quad cab long box with a 6sp and usually get mid to upper teens for mileage. I am happy with this and it seems about average. I am looking at a 2006 3500 quad cab long box pickup with an automatic to buy for a work pickup. I don't really need a 3500 but one has came up. Is there much difference between mileage between a 2500 and 3500 due to the added weight? I would guess there are several other factors involved that are much more important than a few extra pounds but thought I'd try getting somebody's opinion that knows more than me.

I'd doubt you'd notice much difference there at all, provided the rear ends are the same ratio. The real mileage difference seems to come from comparing a single rear wheel pickup to a dual wheel.

I get 18. 5 average unloaded not towing. 8. 5 pulling 1998 toyhauler
6th gear on cruise @ 75mph. I have a G56 trans though and 3. 73 rear axle.

Going from a manual to an auto about 1 MPG lower.
Adding another set of wheels in the back about another 1 MPG lower.

You could see a 2 MPG drop. Some trucks get better fuel economy than others. See if you can try the 3500 for a day. Fill it up with fuel, drive around like you normally do and then refill. That should get an idea of what kind of fuel mileage your going to get. If your serious about buying the dealership probably will fill the fuel tank for you. They always have for me.

I was just thinking, the manual to an auto might not have much of an impact anymore since the G56 will run at higher rpm's than the older manuals. The auto will run lower rpm's than the G56 so that could offset the loose through the auto transmission.
