Actually, I know somebody must be running this combination - I am looking for some firsthand experience. How does it affect the driveability of the truck?

I currently have 35" tires, and would stay with 35s if any good E rated ones were available (Toyos aren't - and I will not use anything less than E due to DW problems). I already have KORE/DRC Race installed, and 37" Toyos might be available, with some minor fender trimming . . .

Just trying to weigh the options.

Hello Heath,

In the absence of Toyo tires I have been recommending the Parnelli Jones Dirt Grip tires. They come in 35/12. 5 17 E and have a good runout rating. Comparable to the Toyo in road manners and last up to 40,000 miles. We have them available while the Toyo is on National Backorder.

The Goodyear GSA is another tire that I would suggest. All terrain styling and mud terrain all wraped up in one good tire. 50,000 miles expected tread wear warranty and it comes in 37/12. 5/17 E. This tire will fit without fiberglass with little or no rubbing. You can find them at the Tire Rack. www.tirerack.com

Ah! Thanks Greg - I had completely forgotten about the GSA - actually, I didn't even know they were still making them! I bet a 37 in that would be pretty slick - but I am still worried about drivability. I like the responsiveness of the truck, and would hate to lose that. I am almost always unloaded - bought the truck more for hunting/off-roading/overkill. Big fan of overkill.

Are any of the wheels you guys carry hub and lug centric and 37s/35s friendly w/o fiberglass? I would like to have these tires on a wider rim, but unwilling to sacrifice the engineering in the stock wheels.

I have been selling a wheel by Centerline. It is the Wilderness Bullet. 17x8. 5 with a 6. 0 backspace. Great wheel and looks good too. The Goodyear tire is only 36 inches tall. just a hair larger than the 35 inch toyo. Driveability should be good. If not, we can add power... . :D That is easy!

What would be better given Toyos weren't an option for road use with occasional farm work? I'm more worried about DW.

35x12. 50x17 BFG MT's

or

37x12. 50x17 BFG MT's

both on stock rims.

Reason I ask this somewhat odd question is the 37's have nearly a 500 lb. more weight rating so I'm wondering if they would be less prone to sidewall flex on the road and therefore less chance of DW?

Johathan,

We have seen the BFG contribute to DW more than any other tire. I have always been a huge fan of BFG but with the mighty CTD in the front, BFG is prone to wobble.

Greg,

Thank you, since you're in the know, I will definitely shy away from the BFG then for my CTD.

Is there any tire you can recommend that's a 35x12. 50x17? I understand Toyo's are like on National backorder, and super pricey at that. Would I be better off just going with like a 37x12. 50 Goodyear MT/R that is E-rated?

I work on a farm, but also travel a lot of highway miles. I encounter a lot of mud on the farm which is the reason for wanting an M/T.

I have been looking at 35x12. 50x17 ratings and most seem to be equal or less than the stock 265. ;(

UPDATE on 22. 5"wheels-Driving/Towing or anyone looking to run 35"/36" tires

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just got back from a camping trip and towed my 5er (10k lbs) over to the coast, only a few hills on this trip and a couple of steep short hills but what I noticed is if you are going to run 22. 5" wheels or any tire approx 36" tall and you have 3. 73 gears, i think it would be best to do itwith a 6 speed truck and not an automatic or a 5 speed like mine, I have no intentions of removing the 22. 5" wheels instead I choose to just add more power (Bigger Turbo, injectors & Fass ) I noticed if I didn't rev it high enough before I shifted the rpm would drop down to 1200 to 1500rpm although I now tow at 65mph in 4th gear instead of 5th and i do like that part=cooler EGTs and right in the power range of 4th gear, my MPG while towing is down about 1. 5 to 2 mpg when Towing although when not towing i am up 4 mpg. With my somewhat agressive driving habits I would average between 14. 5 and sometimes 16 mpg with stock tires and wheels, so far now with the new 22. 5" tire set up,I have averaged 20. 7 mpg on a 80% freeway trip, and 18. 8mpg on a normal around town and some freeway tank of fuel and yes these are hand calc numbers. I am now at 1500rpm @ 55mph and 1750rpm @ 65mph in 5th gear

So in conclusion I dont tow every weekend etc and I actually have to use my 1st gear now when taking off but the gearing difference is not enough to bother me, so if anyone is thinking of doing this or something similar I would recommend 4. 10 gears and a 6 speed to reduce any gearing loss

These wheels do look awsome!

If you don't tow very heavy, I have pro-comp mts in a 35 on stock rims. They have a D rating. I have 6000 miles on them and they work great. They have a buy 3 get 1 free deal now too. Check them out.

Jonathan,

The 37 inch MT/r is a great tire. Probably the best off road tire for our truck. The only issue is the low mileage expectancy of this tire. The PJ Dirt Grip comes in a 37 load range E. The Dirt Grip is $40 less than the same Goodyear. Here is a picture of the tire.

Everything on their site lists a 4. 5" backspace...

Are these a custom run made for you, or do they offer different backspacing?

The Centerline Wheel Catalog shows a few wheels that are still not available. DRC can get the wheels and offer some savings. Give me a call for pricing, we cannot post our prices. Here is a list of what we can get.

Wilderness:

Flint

8 Ball

Bullet

Crossfire

Vector

Wildcat

All wheels offered are the proper size and offset

17x8. 5 with 6 inch back.

Stock is 6. 25" back. With this little adjustment, we have found that a 35 inch tire will not rub or stick out too far. Almost perfect. They are also a rotary forged wheel. Strongest type of wheel available... .

Thanks,

Greg DRC

Thanks for the link. I didn't find that before.

I'd like to see what the 20x8. 5's with 5. 5 backspacing looks like.

Hey Greg - the centerline website also lists the Falcon and Scout. The Falcon, Scout, and Wildcat all seem like they might look good in a high offset version. Any chance of you posting pics of these wheels when and if they pass through your shop? The pics on the Centerline website are okay, but they are not the high offset versions (save the crossfire), and they seem to look very different to me in the high offset version (based on your post of the bullet - I really don't care for that wheel high offset).

I understand the Toyo 37x13. 50s will fit on stock rims with a little trimming at the rear of the front fender - I am wondering how bad they would hit with Centerline wheels, or if Centerline wheels with 37x12. 50s would fit any better.

Greg, would Dirt Grips - either the 33" 12. 5 17 or the 35 fit on our stock wheel - the website says rim width of 8. 5 to 11 - but I thought our stock rims were 8"

Jim,

You are correct, stock rim is 8". 8. 5" is simply the manufacturer's minimum recommended size, but you can go lower.

There are several people on here, including Greg on one of his vehicles, running 37x12. 50's on stock rims.

I'll be running 35x12. 50's on stock rims as soon as UPS delivers. :)

Heath,

I am working on some pictures. The problem is that CL is building to order and I have to wait for pics. We are working real close with them trying to establish a custom wheel. For now, the 17x8. 5 with 6 back is about perfect with a 35 inch tire. With a 37 inch tire, we can make them fit, it does require some trimming for the massive Toyo. The 12. 5 tires will fit without rubbing on the fender except in extreme situations with full articulation. I have run 37's on my truck with a stock wheel and only had 25 psi in them for the life of the tire. Here is a picture from Big Red with a Goodyear MT/r 37/12. 5/17 on the stock wheel. The truck is close to full compression and there is no trimming needed... .
