Here I am

Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 370's are too hot! What other options are there?

With the stock delivery valves, I just get a light haze of smoke when I'm running the valet switch, and I don't think I've ever seen over 1200* on the pyro, even when towing. If it starts getting that hot, I've been in it a really long time, and I'm going up a pretty steep grade, with a load.

With stock DVs I get a little haze of smoke at idle and a little flutter below 1500 RPM. Not enough to notice unless I'm paying close attention.

Careful Forrest... you do realize there are quite a few differences between a 12v and an 03+, which allow the new trucks to handle more heat.

yes, I'm fully aware... my point is that he's worrying too much if he's worried about 900-1150*F

Thanks guys

I'm not concerned about running with the temps i posted, they're warm but fine. What is troublesome is that i can't do anything else but maintain speeds on a slight grade. If the grade turns into a hill, forget it. I'll be at 1500 in just a couple seconds and at 65mph that's not good. At 35mph on hills like Skyline Drive i have to run in 2nd gear or the egt's peg the gage.

With the 370's, i need the 191's or the stumble will come back. It's bad enough that even the wife said "Why's it shaking like that?" Thats my reasoning that the 370's are the cause of my troubles. They are the correct 370's from Joe Donnely and i used the thin washers.

It sounds like the Valet switch might work but won't i be loosing a LOT of power?

Bhale,

I have 300 marine injectors w/181 dv's. My custom fuel plate is aggressive and doesn't defuel on top. I tow a 22' enclosed cargo mate trailer that when fully loaded is around 6-7k. I live in area where there are several long steep grades of 5-7%. I can climb all of them easily holding a minimum of 55 mph. I do have to baby sit the pyro at times. This last weekend I pulled a 6% grade and easily held 65 mph at 1100-1150*.

My buddy was towing about the same weight with his stock 05 duramax w/a allison. There wasn't a grade that he could out pull me or pass me if I was leading. We were pretty much even.

I am pretty happy with this combination. It is a all around great set up for how I use my truck. It tows the trailer well and I can hit 88 mph in the quarter.

Slide the AFC housing all the way back. Will have about the same effect as it did when you slid the plate back.

I forgot to slide my AFC housing back to full forward when I slid my plate full forward. Felt no power gain. Once I noticed where the AFC was sitting, and slid it back forward, I found the power and smoke. :D

I installed my valet switch... . and that knocked my dyno numbers from 325 to 180hp. It wont' take all your power away... . it's just a switch away! :D

When I had the 370's on a 160 pump and a B1-2, temps would climb if I let the boost fall below to around 10psi--when pulling a hill. Solution, flick the toe and get 15-20 psi and/or downshift.

It was too much fuel for too little boost. Something plate selection and position and/or AFC adjustment could fix.

I was running 160pump/16timing/181dv/#4 @75%forward/370's/B1-2 auto.

-------it was okay and pulled decent.

I intalled a 215 pump, moved the plate back, timed at 15. 5 now.

-------it is WAY more responsive and strong.

Don't know about the towing temp thing, have been flying up the hills. ;)

HOW ???

Whats needs done to garentee Smooth Operation With 370's on a 160 Pump ???

DM

My most surprising mod was traction bars. They REALLY helped with the chug-a-lug unsmoothness of the 370/160 combo. Of course the TC lock switch was the other great helper. Kept the TC open most of the time.

Cool... just didn't want some newbie reading that and thinking they could turn their 12v up to 1500*.

Brian,

Are you going to the MDTDC picnic at the end of this month? I'll bring the '96 and show you how the valet switch works. If you're not going, we can try and get together some other time, if you want.

Where are you pulling through that you have a steep grade to run, unless you head my direction into God's Country? :D

I try to keep up with the "what can I run on a grade" discussions because of the mountains here. I live directly north of Knoxville and head to Nashville on occassion.

I'd like to see the Mid Tenn chapter sometime.

Just to the West of me is the Nashville Basin. I'm on the edge of the Highland Rim ("The Barrens" on topo maps). Avg elevation difference is 500-600 feet. Not a long grade, but plenty steep. The rest of mid tn is flatlanders :-laf .

Mid TN meeting this Saturday, a few miles north of Lebanon. Check the thread. http://turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133929

I was planning on being at the picinic but things got screwed up here and i can't make it :( :{

Thanks for the offer!!!!!

I believe i'm going with either 215's or DD2's and see what happens. It's losing power but i can't use what i have so... ... ...

Brian :)

Well, after sliding my plate all the way back my egt's are still too hot when i'm hauling the camper. ~900 on a flat highway at 65 and a slight grade will bring it up 1150+ in no time. Passing is not an option. 35mph climbing the mountains gets me to 1200+ just maintaining speed.

Are there other injectors that'll drop the egt's by 200+ degrees and still keep the power or should i just got back to the 215's?

Thanks

Brian

Brian ... I'm running drilled out 370's. Drilled out by about 20%. I don't have any problems with EGT towing. If I push it to & maintain 30psi, I'll see 1200.

I'd get a bigger Monica.

Forrest

I pull fine with my 370's. I have to run lower gears on hill to keep the egt down though. The more rpm I spin the lower it will run.

Exactly. Gear it down, that's what the transmission is for. Mine is the same, if I let it lug EGT gots through the roof.
