Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Cleaning Engine

A question about my 370's.

Ever since I installed them, first thing when I start up, it starts fine but when I give it much throttle, either under no load or light load it stumbles bad & I get huge amounts of blue/white smoke. Once it warms up, or if I get to 4th & 5th gear & pour it to it, no problem, or the warmer it is outside, the less the problem.

Is this common? Any ideas as to what is causing it? I just thought maybe because it's cold out & because of the bigger injectors it's just pumping more fuel then it can burn.

I really like the power the 370's crank out, but I really wish they made something in between the 215 & 370.

Thanks for your help,

Lonnie

I had exactly the same problem when I installed mine. I recently had the timing set and it cured the cold studder.

Stock timing setting is 13. 5*BTC

Mine slipped to 12. 5* BTC and ran like crap when cold with the 370's

Now it's set at 14. 5* BTC and it doesn't have the miss/studder when cold.

Get your timing checked/set properly and it will probably help.

Take Care

Try backing the governor springs off one click that will give it more low rpm fuel..... you will have to reajust your idle though... . Have to do that on mine per Piers suggestions..... Rick

Do the spring trick and get the timing bumped to 15. 5, remember you just changed allot in the fueling department, now it has to be tuned to that.

Jim

Explain why backing the springs off would make it stop smoking at low rpms.

I have had my springs all over the place, and it still smokes the neighbors out of their house, no matter where they are set. :D

Backing off the spring will give more low rpm fuel it will help in starting up the truck when cold with the 370's... . may take care off the stumble a little too... . dont now about the smoke... . Rick

Ok, I don't think I gave enough info. It won't stumble & smoke hard until around 1900 - 2000 rpm under light load, 1600 - 1700 rpm just sitting. The stumble doesn't seem to me like a lack of fuel but too much. ? But then again I can't really say for sure. If it were a gas rig it acts like its flooding.

Thanks,

Lonnie

they do make an injector inbetween the 215 and the 370's and it is the 300 if you are interested I have a set for sale.

I had a set of 300's, they ran well, lots of cool, smokeless power.

Excellent street injector, I was over 300 hp on the dyno, with a #5 and 16 degrees of timing. 22 mpg.

Timing!

Lonnie:

From my experiece with "flooding" on very cold days below zero with stock injectors and near or below timing as compared to what I have now is Timing will solve it. I had it before, I do not now! Unless you know for a fact your timing is at or above 14 I would give this a check.

I am running pretty high timing. But I also have a thicker headgasket causing lower compression which would only worsen the cold weather starting, operation, and "flooding" stumbles.

My truck has never ran so good as it does this winter. Still starts instantly. Even with clouds of white smoke (big time white smoke now as compared to before) I can free rev well past 2000 with never a stumble or "flooding" hesitation.

Advanced timing and arctic operation are like ice cream and pumpkin pie!

Well it sounds like I need to advance my timing. i just need to find someone who will do it for me. I asked Cummins & they will only set it to factory spec's.

Thanks for the help!!

Gentlemen,

Thanks for the offers, the ticket from Mi. might be a little steep though.

JGK, if my son wasn't going in the Army on the 4th I'd come!

Bob V. What are you up to this Sat. ? I'm coming to the Hotrod show in Portland with my son. We could leave really early & come up, then catch the show in the afternoon.

Thanks,

Lonnie

Quick fix:

Time engine to TDC with pin, check to make sure pump is at TDC too looking through the acorn nut window. Break the injection pump gear loose, mark damper with a white line and make a pointer. Put the key into the pump to keep it from moving, with the injection pump nut off, gear off, back the engine up 1/16th"-1/4" (keep it in the median of those two numbers) reinstall injection pump gear and run. You will be amazed, works every time and is usually good for 5-10Hp guarranted, no b. s. I have done this a lot, and as barnyard as it may sound, as long as you don't go over the 1/4" standard you'll be fine.

About backing the motor a 1/16 or 1/4''. Would it make sence to motor at least 20 or 30 degrees. Then come back to the desired position you wan't the motor set at? That would take out any lash in the gear train out. Hope I make sence here.
