I', looking at getting a 375 Ruger in the Alaskan Model... ... I know about the isues of availability BUT I sure love the shorter rifle and the way the beats handles recoil.....

Ruger M77® Hawkeye® Alaskan in . 375 Ruger

I know the RUM and Weatherby's are more - BUT I don't need more and I don't want such a huge heavy weapon and ungodly $$$ Ammo..... let alone being pounded at both ends.....

This loading data says that the 235 Grain Speer can be pushed along at 3195 FPS @ 5,328 ft lbs with a . 06" group  Considering this is a 375 hole - that's fantastic... ...

and a 265 gr at 3054 FPS with 5490 Ft Lbs seems pretty good to me...

Those ballistics are very impressive. I have a hankering for one of those Hornady proprietary rounds, my own self:-laf. However, lay in a good supply of ammo or components(brass) just to cover your needs. It sounds like a bear hunters dream rifle and should be the perfect Elk hammerOo. . Its got more punch than a . 375 H&H in a smaller package! GregH

From everything I've read it's a great rifle and cartridge. I don't know if I'd use the 235 grain Speer bullet hunting anything however--that bullet is designed to expand at a significantly lower velocity. At such a high velocity it would probably expand far too violently. I think if it were me I'd use 270 to 300 grain bullets.

I have a M77 300 MAG , M77 7MM MAG ,Both rifles have iron sites and both are scoped ,And I take them Bear hunting , Elk hunting, Deer hunting , Boar hunting , Never had any issues with either rifle .
I do my own reloading .
It's all about shot placement .
Good luck

Ever get one of these bad boys, hammersley?

I'm about to "pull the trigger" on another larger caliber rifle... . wanting a lighter weight synthetic/composite with stainless this time... shoulder breaker hehe.

My hearts says H&H, logic says H&H, but the inquisitive part of my brain says "get the Ruger... . get the Ruger... "

Looking @ the same Alaskan model you were/are... ...

I do custom loading for a few friends, one had a pre 64 Win. converted to 375 Ruger. He sent me the gun and money for dies. What a round, liked it so much, I sent a 06 Ruger to the same gun smith and am waiting. Now if I just had the $$ for my Cape Buffalo hunt, I could die happy!!

Similar "want" not Need item as yet... . but I do love the idea... just not the availability of AMMO... . sure you can reload but my luck I'd loose all my Ammo and never be able to find it... ... . so I'm sticking with the H&H for now.....

Same issue I'm having. Looks like a great round and the Alaskan Rugers are pretty cool, but the H&H is winning out still.
