Had my Brutus dynoed last week and at TC lockup in fourth gear it showed 377Hp which is plenty for me.

This is my first post, so to start with, I want to thank the TDR staff for a very informative magazine and for providing this forum to keep us newbies out of trouble and to help add a little excitement to our trucks and into our lives.

More importantly, I want to thank the daily posters who so generously share their experiences and advice on a regular basis.

Not only have I learned what the 2001. 5 model year is, and what the rings behind the back seat are for, but by just lurking and following popular advice, I have added enough goodies to make me grinn a lot when driving around. ( See signature)

The ride is awsome!

As time goes on, I will post periodically and probably defy the notion that there is no such thing as a dumb question. Hope you'll bear with me.

Our intrest is remote camping, back roads travel and visiting the continent from one end to the other.

My other ride is a '76 VW Camper...

Thanks to all

OMG, don't let my wife see this (enough HP) :)

Someone throw this guy outta here... . LOL.

I can't stand it Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, did he really say "enough for me"???????

Someone tell me how much is enough because I don't know?? The only thing limiting my HP is my wallet.

And if she does read this it will be 2 things! :p

Brutus,

Am I reading you sig right? All you have is an Edge EZ and the transmission and you made 377hp? What kinda of Dyno and what was the correction?

Anderw

Depends

Last year at this time we were touring South America in our 68HP air cooled VW Camper that weighed 5000Lb loaded. We had a ball crossing the Andes several times between Chile and Argentina at passes up to 16000 feet and 18 - 20% plus grades. We traveled 25000 miles in nine months over terrain you would not believe...

So you might agree that a 377HP machine with a 1000LB camper

is a definite upgrade to us and enough power for wherever we choose to go from now on.

We'll not push plows, pull sleds or humongous 5th wheelers, nor will it race. (Well, maybe smoke a couple of showoffs)

Uhh,say, are there any pop-up camper truck races anywhere?

While driving through the enchanted valley in central Chile, we met a couple from Quebec. They were visiting the Capel winery and sampling the products. They drove a Ram Cummins with a pop up camper and helped convince us that we needed one also.

Jacque and Jeannine, if you are a members of this forum, let me hear from you.

P. S. My wife does not know about the goodies or could care less.

She doesn't like my truck 'cause it's big and rattles and smells bad. I can identify with that...

Sharp eye Tex.

Before the Dyno I had a set of DD2's added last week and forgot to add it to the signature. It has been corrected.

Thanks for the wakeup call.

The dyno is a Dynojet248C and the 377HP was derived by factoring in the ambient temp, elevation, barometric pressure and humidity. Does that sound right?

The dyno is fairly new to them, so there may be operator trouble involved. They could not locate the tach sender, so I have no torque reading.

The graph print-out they gave me shows the TC lockup point at exactly 100MPH when the 377 horses were calculated.

This will be confirmed on an other dyno in the near future and re-posted.

P. S. Where is the tachometer sender/connection on this truck where the dyno sensor lead can be connected?

Is there a formula by which one can calculate the torque from the numbers that I have?

Thank you.

You should be near 890ftlb. . follow the 'Dyno sheets' link in my sig.

I made 377/891 w/dd3's + a PEC.

I now have a drag comp and a B1. . with a cam and shower-heads on the way.

there's never enough!!!!!

Most dyno's use an optical sensor for diesels... they put reflective tape on the crank and magneticly attacha sensor to the frame.

Marco said ... "The E C M provides the output for the tach! No need to use the CPS to get a signal!!! A normal 6 Cyl engine tach has worked for me. The pin is 39??? can't remember don't have the book here handy. "

Brutus....

You've got the dyno sheet/numbers, but I'm personally confused as to your 377 hp with EZ and DD2's. Not attacking your post, at all.

I've read many posts over the past 18 mos. and thought that the general consensus was that my sig. (below) was ~300 hp.

Somebody want to give me a guess... yeah, I know, get it on the dyno.

BTW... . welcome Brutus.

Yes folks

All of you are paying attention and came to the right conlusion. I just came back in after checking my little box and on the side is plainly written: Power Edge!

I even installed it myself, but never read that sign.

Duh,talk about unsmart.

Mark

Thanks for the advice, the dyno sheet numbers and your pointers.

Sounds like next week you will be well over 500 horsies.

It must be true that too much of a good thing is wonderful!?

So my continuing education goes on...

I'm still wondering about the comp/ez thing on this post. I believe my EZ says poweredge on it, but is quite different than a comp box. Brutus-do you have the adjustable-in cab unit?? ie, with pump wire tapped? that would explain the differnece in hp. I'm running an EZ now and on the fence about dd 2's or 3's... which is why i'm asking. trying to get a feel for what my rear wheel hp # might be after DTT stuff/injectors.

Get off the fence...

I am assuming everything else is stock... so, I assume you have an HY35. the housing is 9 or 10 cm... way too small.

you need a HX35 12 off a manual truck, DD3's and keep the EZ and set it to 'kill'. it should put you near 400hp. If not . . swap the box and you'll be over 400. You'll only be able to use about 300 for towing(100% duty cycle) but for short runs it'll scream.

the autos respond very well to mods. the VP44 in them has adifferent fueling curve. it fuels more, earlier, for longer. the ECM defuels to limit torque and hp to keep the transmission in one piece. The fueling boxes overcome this.

l8r,

Mark

what kind of $$ am i going to be looking at for a hx-35?? any good sources for used ones?? hadnt thought about turbos... will i still be able to tow (up to around 8000lbs) with the ddIII's if i set the ez to settiing 1?? how much lag will that turbo add? i cant believe you said 400?? i'd be PSYCHED :D if i could put out close to that figure without tapping the pumpwire (did that once and ate the cost of vp-44 so i'm a bit hesitant... ) any $$ ballpark figures for trans mods (installed) plus injectors/hx-35?? now all the sudden i'm feeling an urgent need to get my guages in... . thanks for the input

First off. Gauges are a must. You could probably find a used HX35 for under $500. . more like $3-400.

Lag is nonexistant.

EGTs will be dependent on the throttle position w/the EZ. Towing won't be an issue as long as you watch your guages.

Pricking the wire doesn't kill the pump. Lack of fuel pressure behind it does. GET A FP GAUGE!!!!

Do you have 4" exhaust? BHAF??? Both help EGTs.

The only bad part about this is you will be maxing out the turbo. the next step will require another turbo swap or at least a housing change. Housing changes swap EGTs for spool up. . like robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Kurt has a new turbo(AT-4) coming out in the next 30 days... a bit cheaper than a B1 but spools to beat the band

would i be better off to wait for a kwikkurt turbo??? could i run the dd3's at all as it is, or would things get WAY to hot? i know i probably toasted the injection pump with a lack of fuel pressure... . but even knowing that it's tough to do it again. of course the nice cummins beige one that i have now isnt under warranty anyway... ... .....

IMO. . yes. Order the PE Comp (upgrade the EZ) to get the extra juice you want.

In a month or so put on the turbo and injectors. If you want lots of towing power put on a B1. The AT-4 will be a lot faster on spool-up but flows less air... still comparable to an H2E though. The B1 flows significantly more than an H2E. n With a B1 you will never get into EGT trouble unless running 5x5 flat out.

With DD3s a B1 and a tweaked transmission you'd be running nearly the same mods that KatDiesel is... he's getting below 13. 5 in the 1/4 mile.

Kat will be in Tulsa on the 20th with an AT-4 and a B1. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Kurts turbos are not cheap but they are the best single turbo setups available and the cost much less than twins.

PM me for prices...

Brutus-do you have the adjustable-in cab unit?? ie, with pump wire tapped?

Yes. The box it came in says Power Edge Comp

It has a the adjustable in-cab unit and the pump wire is hooked up.

On the 2/2 setting it dynoed at 303HP

On the 5/5 it produced 377 and quite a bit of smoke
