Has anyone experienced a problem with rust on the 3rd generation trucks around the rear fenders? I've had my 2004. 5 for 3 years this June. I have 53K miles on it.
I noticed the paint bubbling (rusting through from the back side) last fall on the right side. I took it into my dealer last fall, and they said they've had several other trucks in with similar problems. Chrysler usually cuts out the bad spot and replaces with new steel in that section. I asked if it rusted out on one side like that won't it do the same on the other. They said if it does, I can bring it back in then. They took pictures and sent it to Chrysler and they said they would see what they said.
The dealer told me that Chrysler was replacing some boxes and they would see what they can do. They called me about a week later and said that Chrysler would replace the box. They said if I wanted to wait until spring, I could get it replaced then and go through the Michigan winter with my old box.
Since last fall, the left side has also started bubbling up the paint. I called up the dealer and let them know, but of course they have a new manager in their body shop and they don't have the pictures they took before or anything that said Chrysler would replace the box. They took more pictures and now they're saying Chrysler will replace just the steel around the fenders, but that is all. It will take about a week in the body shop for the repairs.
I asked what other options I had and they said they would contact Chrysler again. They may be able to get both sides of the box replaced. They called me back and want me to bring the truck back in for some more pictures. I won't get a chance to get it in until next week.
I wanted to know if anyone has had similar problems with rust? Does anyone have suggestions on how to handle this with Chrysler? Thanks.
