Gentlemen

Alright all you driveline experts answer this if you can?

Is the 9. 5 AAM solid front axel found on all the 3rd gen 4X4 trucks the same as the 9. 5 axel found on the rear of 03 and newer 1500 HD crew cab Chevy/GMC semi floating, 1990 through 98 Chevy/GMC 3/4 ton eight lug trucks that came with the 5. 7 L motor and 8600 lb GVW chasis's?.

I think it is, :{ it's just been built for a front axel application ;). And if it is this would explain alot of the problems with metal shavings that have been disscussed on the TDR. The GM corperate 9. 5 semi floating axel 14 bolt has been in production with GM for quite some time and was prone to many problems over the years. Let me know if I'm all messed up its just that it really looks like the same axel!! :--).

05 3500 4X4 Laramie DRW 325/610 6 spd 4:10's new on 10/30/04

Sold 99 3500 4X4 SLT Laramie DRW ATS trans w/VB TC comander afe Auto meter and the 53 block :{ thats why shes gone.

I think it's the same except... . it's a full floater. Maybe that takes care of the issues you say they had with the semi-floaters.

Both are 9. 25" (not 9. 5) but the pinion stem is thicker at the outer bearing on the 4x4, the 4x4 gears are designed for the high pinion reverse rotation (i. e. opposite curvature). Capacity is 5. 2 pt vs. 4. 5 pt for the 1500s. Weight capacity is 5200 lb for the 4x4 front axle and 3900 for the 1500 rear axle.

Thank for the reply yo and Joe.

I thought they bore the same shape the more I started taking a longer look at the two of them. I only hope that they "AAM" have improved them they should have its been around long enough. And from what Joe has stated it sounds like they have. I have also noticed that they are being used in the Hummer H2 aswell.
