The third injection event and a camshaft designed for internal EGR are responsible for your poor mileage. They're also responsible for your dirty oil.

i do belive that the cat an retarding the timing to meet emissoins is due to the lower mileage but most chips advance timing and those cats fall off all the time... its the damnest thing then the pick up a few miles but they changed the fuel a few years ago so you wont see the milage we use to

I like my 305 hp 04. 19 mpg is not too hard to do. Sits in the road good (empty and 23600 combined) and is comfortable on trips, including a 10k trip to Alaska. Original Michelins look like they are going to make 100k (90k now). No ball joint, u joint trouble. Fuel pump was replaced with an in-tank unit under warranty. Intercooler "bouncing" on the frame about drove me bananas for the first 2. 5 years. That team that that came up with this high stall converter for a Cummins must have been hired off of a Yugo reject list. It is obvious they never towed anything. I just try to get lock-up as soon as possible. AC won't cool sometimes on long trips. (GOTTA find why!!) Drool list? A Goerend trans and converter and Spyntec hubs. I'll drve this one till the Dimcrats and Ohammer outlaw them for commoners and fuel is priced beyond reason. Mark

If you get an auto, go with a 6. 7. The 68RFE is a much better trans than the 48re, atleast stockwise. If you plan to add a bunch of power (more than a downloader or box) then skip the auto or stick to an 03-07 5. 9. The 68RFE is still questionable with added power. 6. 7 needs to have DPF deleted and EGR blocked off, and an H&S or Smarty for code-free deletes.

Best mileage would be 03 or 04.

Most bang-for-your-buck would be 04. 5-07; they will always make more power than a comparable 03/04 or 6. 7 with relatively minor mods (programmer, intake, exhaust, etc. )

Love my 03, and love my 07. Cant go wrong with any 3rd gen in my opinion
