Need a little advice concerning my 3rd generation CTD.

My truck is a 2003 model, and I would like to modify my exhaust using the straight pipe methood. Being that it is an 03 model, it does not have a cat or resonator. Would having a resonator installed help my truck not be as loud as some of the others that I have heard? I don't want to change my entire exhaust system, but would like to have a loud but civil sound that won't drive my crazy with cabin drone. Any advice or suggestions are welcome.

I don't think you can have loud and civil at the same time. Drone will be a problem. Maybe try something like a MBRP muffler. It picked up the "grunt" sound on my truck but does not offend when cruising.

I've got the MBPR system on my truck. It is fairly civil driving or cruising with a light foot and no load. Towing heavy the noise level raises and is LOUD after 2000 RPM and your foot in it. Personally I liked the stock muffler better but I had to change my system because of cracking pipes. I was also hoping to gain a reduction in EGTs.

I put a Hog exhaust on my '03, but it was way too loud with too much drone for my taste using just the Hog muffler. I ended up moving the Hog muffler to the front of the system to act as a resonator (flutes forward), and then installed a 30" Magnaflow muffler where the stock muffler sits. The sound is now much more mellow (just mildly aggressive during acceleration), and the drone is gone. I'm very happy with the final results.

i have the silverline 4"system and really like it not to bad on the drone sound has to get about 22000 rpm to get really loud and it bolted in easy.

Id like to see that rpm:-laf

I did the MBRP and left the cat.

Put the muffler right after the cat.

Sound has more grunt on takeoff but hardly louder than stock on the road.

My cat has been gone for about a week now ;) That and with the mbrp cool dools, it does sound a lot more throaty. Suprisingly though it is not as bad as I thought. It is pretty mello cruising speeds (65-70) But when I romp on it, she roars! no drone however. mbrp seems to be a well engineered exhaust system.

Did it my 03 and wish I didn't. its ok until I'm pulling 5ver and its is encredble

loud when I'm in the throttle under load. I will probably go back to some other after market exhaust shortly.

Check the muffler in my sig. It is about $100 from Cummins. Have it mounted as far forward as possible to manage drone. It will make your truck sound like a TRUCK, but not drive you out of the cab. I like mine a lot. Several buddies with '03s have put on the same muffler with similar results.

Let us know what you do and how you like it.

I have an 03 s. o and it is all pipe. Sounds like a semi truck when it hits 4th gear. I like it. But i would like a straight forward answer. Which is better for my truck. Straight pipe as is or something like an mbrp. And for me the louder, the better. Im 20 so i want my diesel to be heard!:D

Thanks

-Mike
