I was trying to notice on 3rd gens that I see, how many of em have Cummins engines versus Hemis. Out of 8 I saw on the way home tonight, 7 of em had Cummins engines! I'd like to hear what percentage is equipped with what engine. I believe Dodge will sell the heck out of these trucks and gain a bigger market share, if nothing else just because they are so much quieter. I know I'm tempted but mine is so close to being paid for.

I'd have to say nine out of ten I see are Cummins. However, there is a Black 3500 dually 4X4 Hemi running around here with dual exhaust, oversized tires and rims and a few other goodies that's a show stopper. It sounds killer and he wastes no time getting up to speed with it. If he can afford the truck, he can probably afford the gas for it. But my hat's off to him. My other favorite is a '93 dually ext cab with Cummins. It's also black with wine colored candy paint in it. It also has dual exhaust out the back and sounds fantastic as he rows through the gears.

I must like trucks or something... :D

Around here, westside of L. A. there are a lot of 1500's, I'd say 4/7 have Hemis, out of the HD's I see all have been Cummins, except one Hemi in a 2500. But I only see one 2500/3500 for every 12-15 1500's. These third gens are taking quite a market share from would-be SUV drivers.

Slightly off subject, in Tucson the popular configuration for a 1500 is SWB 2WD regular cab with few options. I'm not sure if it's just a local style or if it's because of the income level of the average Tucsonian compared to other parts of the country. There sure are a lot of trucks around here, of every brand and style, ... many well past their prime.

DC is reporting that 35-40% of all Rams are heavies. Three quarters of all heavies are diesels. Net result, of every 100 Rams sold, around 26-27 have the big C on the side of the fender.

I think in the cold Midwest diesel's get a bad rap that's why the numbers are lower.

Craig, I still think you need to add to the 3G numbers;)

HINT!

Kirk,

I think I should too but the rational (penny pinching) part of me is still resisting the temptation! Have you checked out the toyhaulers around ? (hint, hint)

Craig

I've seen a total of 3 hemi's in HD's here since they came out. I'd guess in my area diesel takes the HD market 3:1 and Ford is holding up the 1.

TBrennan- I am between you and the big pond, and things are the same here, maybe even fewer than 1 diesel to every 20 gassers. And on the sales lots. . just as rare.

Nick - Not everyone is as stupid as you think they are. Might be that their "toy" budget is not as big as yours. When you consider that adding the Cummins puts $6,000 on the sticker (Engine and Trans upgrades - and this is minimum), not everyone can afford the cost. My brother bought gassers for years because he could not afford a diesel. Child support takes a significant chunk of his income. I made the statement to him one time I don't know why someone would buy a 1 Ton Dually gasser, and he replied if he could afford the diesel he would. I had never thought about. You might want to.

In addition, in today's economy jobs are not as secure as they used to be. I know before I ordered mine I thought long and hard about that fact.

I don't think Nick said anyone was stupid for buying a gasser. As a matter of fact I am sure everyone on this board has owned a gasser before. However Dodge is doing a great job using the Hemi name to sell trucks and people are buying all the hype. Although the diesels are more expensive, a large number of the hemi owners could of bought cummins equipped rigs had they chosen to. A hemispherically-shaped combustion chamber is not a Dodge exclusive. Many cars and engines have been use a hemi style comb. chamber, for years including hondas and toyotas. Putting the Hemi name on a Ram is nothing more than a selling point in my opinion.
