4.10 gears

I get 11 MPG pulling 12,000 lb 5th wheel at 77 MPH with my 3. 54 gears. If I need to climb or go faster I just push a button on the Edge box, no downshifting needed.

I have had the 4. 10s on my 98. 5 and my '03 HO and they are great gears. Manual transmissions on both. My 2 previous trucks were 3. 54 autos and I did not like either of them compared to the 4. 10s. I would not get a higher gear for towing my fiver.

The 4. 10 gears in my rear axle tows my 16,000 pound fiver very nicely, thank you. And I still average 11 mile to the gallon pulling that monster. Bone stock.

It is good to read all the positive replies regarding the 4. 10 gears. The mileage looks good for pulling the trailers, so it looks like the 4. 10's are a winner. I am getting use to the higher rev's and look forward to hooking the trailer to it for the "acid test. " I still have my 3. 54 geared '96 which seems a little more peppy empty, but the '96 I have with the 4. 10's is heavier without the trans being tweaked. Looking forward to getting out on the road seeing some of this great country!

If you choose the 4. 10s your mileage empty will likely suffer at highway speeds. If, on the other hand, you pull a heavy load the improved towing capacity of the lower gears will be a big advantage. Pretty hard to have it both ways. The G3's have the 3. 73 gears as standard, but the 4. 10s give you an extra ton of rated capacity.
