I have a 98 Auto 3. 54 rear end gear . thinking about going to a 4. 10 gear

for towing. I will also use it for a daily driver.

with the 3. 54 at 70 MPH I am turning 1950 RPMS what would I be turning at 70 with the 4. 10 gear I have 245 tires . Anyone useing this setup with the auto & how do you like it.

I have what you have with 19. 5s on it, You wont like your mileage if you change it. Id just put some more fuel to it, and try that first not alot 50hp should do it

I have 265's on my '96 with 4:10's and i love them. I run about 2250 at 75 mph. I wouldn't own a 4wd without 4:10's but i like a bigger than stock tire as well.

I have the 3. 54 gears. They work fine towing. I just lock out OD unless it's flat interstate and no wind. If you tow a lot in the mountains then the 4. 10 gears might be better. For a daily driver the highway RPM is too high for good mileage.

LOP,

If you are turning at 1950 rpm with the 3. 54's then you will be turning 2258 rpm with the 4. 10's. It doesn't matter what tires you have unless you change them too.

4. 10/3. 54 = 1. 158

1950 rpm x 1. 158 = 2258 rpm

P. S. (Edit): For my money, I'd buy a U. S. Gear overdrive (not underdrive). It will probably cost the same (less if your truck is 4x4) and will allow you to split the gears.

To choose between an overdrive and an underdrive: Answer this question: Do you need a gear lower than low or a gear higher than high?

If you need an additional lower gear, choose an underdrive. If you need an additional higher gear, choose an overdrive. Both units will allow you to split gears.

for the money you'd spend on a gear swap, you could add some fuel which would give the same drivability or better than the 4. 10's would down low, and you'll still be able to run a decent speed down the highway...

I've got 3. 54's and a 265/75 tire, and I'm constantly lookin' for another gear on top of 5th! :(

How heavy do you plan to tow?My first truck 4x4 had a 4. 10 & I put 35" tires on it & still wished it had the 3. 54. My (new) 98 has a 3. 54 & Ive towed 10,000 w/it still stock. Don't forget when your empty you'll still be crankin the high rpm w/a 4. 10.

I agree you need to get a plate, maybe some bigger inj if needed & keep your rpm's down.

the truck in question is an auto, OD in an auto is taller than 5th in a standard. My truck with auto/4. 10 and 315 tires turns 1950RPM at 70mph,perfect for me. An auto 3. 54 and 285 tire will get you 2000RPM at 80mph.

not much change in mileage if any.

Near as I can tell I have changed tire sizes and the mileage doesn't change

i started out with 245 and went to 305 and the 305's slowed the engine down but the mileage was a little worse short trips with the larger tires. I know a guy who had 354 then went to 373 then to 410's, and mileage didn't change.

Just my 2 cents

Ooo! Ooo! I'll trade ya!

the good thing about 4:10 is that your chances of getting a limited slip are good (or 100%? dunno). a 3:54 with a limited slip is harder to find. though i do half highway and half around town driving, i wouldn't give up the 3:54 unless i was doing full time heavy towing.

3.54 and 315's

My 95 with the Auto and 315's has 3. 54 gears in it. At 70mph I am turning approx 1800 rpm's. 80 mph gives me about 2000 rpm's. My speedo is about 4 to 5mph off so the numbers are approximate. I love the 3. 54's gas mileage as long as you stay below 60 which is just a tick under 1500 rpms for me. Anything over that and you take a drastic fuel economy hit. For example... below 60 on the highay I get approx. 19mpg. above 60 on the highway I get 14 mpg. around town and higway gives my 15 mpg no matter what.

I agree with most of the posters here who say leave the 3. 54's and get a plate. I put a #5 in mine in the stock location and straight piped it. I have way more power than stock, good gas mileage, and my stock transmission is holdng up fine as long as I don't try to showboat wth a 10k# trailer up steep hills. You can tell when the T/C is screaming and just back off a little. My $. 02
