Question about Aisin trans and 4.10 gears

Hello community..I have posted in the past about drive shaft rumble when taking off. I am now having issues with the 4:10 rear end. I have 103,000 on my 2016 ram 3500 max torque Aisin transmission. This is now going to be the 2nd rear end gear assy that the dealer is putting in my truck..I pull heavy all the time..4 cars..about 28,000 most of the time..the truck already rumbles (which i think its in the carrier bearing) now the rear end is grinding on take off. This is making about 1 rear every 50,000..something is not right..my 2007 went over 1/2 million miles with no rear end issues..I am having a 1 piece drive shaft made on the first of the month..I will update on how that goes with eliminating the rumble..I need to know why this 4:10 ratio rear end keeps taking a crap on me ..I'm not about to keep putting a rear end assy in this truck every 50,000 miles..HELP!!!

2016 Ram 3500 6.7, 4:10 ratio

sold 2007 ram 3500 6.7 with 533,000 miles on it

sold 1994 ram 1500 v8 trans crapped out 150,000

What was the issue with the rear end the first time around?

Not sure what exactly was wrong tech took off rear cover and metal shavings and small pieces of metal was inside the housing...they replaced the ring gear assy and that solved the problem..they did not replace the pinion..taking it to the shop in the morning..will update..

One of our members here had a low mileage rear axle failure in a service truck. But, I believe that it had 3.42 gears. Maybe he will chime in with specifics.

Whatever comes from the dealer..I will say that the rear was just serviced about 2 months ago..they changed the oil in it without removing the cover..I wonder if it's got something to do with the oil..the first time it went out was at about 50,000..oil had not been changed..

...they replaced the ring gear assy and that solved the problem..they did not replace the pinion....

If that is the case, the gear set did not have a snowballs chance...The ring and pinion is a matched set.

In my opinion, the factory is using gear oil too light for heavy duty use. I also think the oil needs changed in the first few thousand miles on a new truck if you tow heavy.

I would at least use 75/110 synthetic, and if you tow in the Mountain States, I would use 75/140. I use 85/140 conventional oil in my trucks with Dana axles. I understand the AAM axle prefers synthetic.

Agreed, not only should you not mismatch R&P's, you certainly should not mix a new one with one that has been in use. They wear together.

the first time it went out was at about 50,000..oil had not been changed..
Your truck calls for 75W85 GL5 Synthetic fluid, changed in 20,000 mile intervals in heavy trailer towing circumstances.

You were lucky to get it covered at all.

As others have said, the ring & pinion should have been replaced together. Sounds like an inept technician worked on your truck. A knowledgeable tech would have submitted a request for both pieces to have been replaced. This just might be your saving grace, since you are now outside the 100k warranty.

As I said earlier, I was putting the truck in the shop today..here's what i found out..the ring gear is separate from the carrier assy..it bolts on..the ring gear and the pinion were replaced at the same time..the truck had 12,000 miles on it..metal shavings were in the housing..more than normal, so those components got replaced under warranty..I also found out that when the oil was changed three months ago, the tech did remove the rear cover and there were no unusual signs of wear at that time and the rear was doing fine..today, the tech changes the oil and puts the 75/140 synthetic oil in it due to the fact that it only "rumbles" when it hot and towing..with 103,000 miles on the truck and 91,000 on the new ring and pinion and only two oil changes in the interim, its possible the oil was breaking down, even with a change less than 3 month ago..so, the diagnosis is if this unit continues to "rumble on take off" after today then they will change the entire assy under a "good will" replacement as I am only 3500 miles out of factory warranty and this dealer has done all of my scheduled maintenance on this truck since new..my prediction is that I will be bringing it back for the full replacement of the gear assy..and that's all I've got to say about that..

zzollwalk, I had the same issue with my '12 dually with 3.73s. The carrier wore out and took out the rear bearings at 47k. At 78k it did it again. I traded for a '14 dually Aisin 4.11s. I could feel the carrier going out at 30k. They replace the whole drive line and carrier. the problem isn't the gears, its the weak carrier. With the torque these trucks put out, we really need a medium duty carrier bearing.

Thank you for that..when you say "carrier" are you talking about the carrier bearing for the two piece drive shaft? I know that the center carrier is weak and I think it is the cause of a lot of the issues I'm having..I had a 2007 and never had any drive line issues..going in on the 1st of the month to get a 1 piece shaft made for it..if the heavier oil doesn't allow the rear end assy to operate properly, then I will have the entire assy replaced along with a 1 piece aluminum drive shaft..I'd like to know if anyone else has had to do this??
