Why do you want to change? A couple people have done it, but not posted if it improved mileage or not. That was at least one of the reasons why they wanted to change. If it is for mileage I would be very surprised if you see much of a improvement, I have tried driving at lower speeds (on the highway) to see if lowering the RPM 150-200 would make much of a difference and on my truck it has not, my mileage stays pretty consistent.

I know why he wants to do it. He lives in California and the Dodge Cummins with 4:10 SUCKS fuel at the speeds we drive here when we're not stuck in traffic. Sorry I can't help you on the gears. You'd be in like Flynn if it was a Chevy 12 bolt though.

No you do not have to change the carrier, I went from 373 to 410s for towing. I had a off road shop do the swap. I still have my 373 gears for sale they are listed in the classifieds, They only have 11000 miles on them.

IF you are going to change, I would go all the way to 3. 54

Remember the 2. 73s that used to come in Oldsmobiles? My mom's 455 '72 Olds would get 19+ mpg running 70+ on the Oklahoma turnpikes.

It was the pits in town though.
