I found a 2005 on a local lot with an NVG transmission that may be the answer to waiting any longer for my new G56. I currently don't have a truck and waiting with no answers is getting old fast.

It's pretty close to what I want but has a 4. 10 gear instead of the 3. 73 I ordered. I know the G56 has less over-drive gear making it similar to the NVG with 4. 10's but I'm looking for some opinions.

Is the 4. 10 too much gear for this truck? I'm pulling 8000lbs now and I may upgrade to a larger camper in the future but I doubt I will go much over 10,000 or so. I'm on the east coast also so I have hills to deal with but not real large ones.

4.10s

I have 4. 10s in mine. When I first got my truck I was driving about 450 miles a day and hated the 4. 10s. Once I hooked a trailer on it and felt how well it pulled I would never do anything different. I pulled a broken Ford F350 flowerpoke on a flatbed up a 6% grade with the cruise on 80mph and it didn't slow down at all! :D

I have 3. 73 and would prefer 3. 54 instead. I pulled a load of hay out west for a friend of mine last summer, grossed out at 26,600 and had plenty of power, and that was before the TST!!!

Your decision should also depend on how much interestate you use... in ND, our speed limit is 75 and with the NV5600/3. 73, that's 2200 RPM, and with peak torque of the Cummins at 1400-1600 RPM (depending on which source you believe) I think its running faster than it needs to. I've often thought that Dodge should of just put in a 7 speed manual with two overdrives and 4. 10 rears, and get 70-80 mph crusing range down to 1800-2000 RPM, while still having plenty of gears down low.

But based on what the new G56 transmission ratios we've seen... I'm glad I've got the NV5600 with 3. 73's.

I have 4:10s in mine and hate it. Even on 35" tires I still wish I would have gone 3:73s. I was behind my father-in-law (stock '05 CTD) with his 3:73s and our rpms where the same. For as much freeway driving I do I'd rather have the 3:73s and 35" tires. I tow a 9,000lbs rv every now and then but not enough to warrant 4:10s. 4:10s are a mistake in my opinion unless you do some serious towing. . 02¢

3. 73's have been fine for me... even with my BFG 315's. I do mostly city/freeway driving and a fair bit of towing through out the summer. If I was towing a lot I would want the 4. 10's. With the 3. 73's you'll be fine but might want some extra power mods to give it a kick in the pants. At least that's how I feel with the bigger tires on there.

I had 4. 10's on my 01. 5 and have 3. 73's on the 04. 5. The biggest problem with the 4. 10's is the increased noise level with the higher RPM's running empty on the freeway. Since I almost never ran on the freeway w/o my 5er, this was not a problem for me. In town, the 4. 10's work fine with no loss of milage, and when towing, it's nice to have them anyway. In summary, go for it.

I own both... . my 01 has 3. 73's my 04, 05 has 4. 10 and my sons 04. 5 has the 3. 73's

Pulling a trailer at or under 12,000 lbs I don't think I'd buy the 4. 10, I'd go for the extra fuel economy and quiet ride of the other rear end..... pulling trailers up to 20K we find the need for the 4. 10 and find reverse is still to high when we back up. . and still get a lot of clutch chatter... ... but my 10K travel trailer pulls with no problem with any of our stuff... ... get the 3. 73's

An occansional run of 75 or 80 does not bother me and the 4:10 is great with the camper , but if I did much interstate travel I would prefer 3:73. . Some day I might buy a heavyer

5th wheel and then I'll change to the rickson wheel

Got one word for ya... GEARVENDORS!

my current truck is a 99 with 4:10's. I love em but at highway speeds it would be great to be down around 18-1900 RPM. At 65 now I'm turning about 2200. 55 MPH drops the RPM down to 1900 and the fuel millage jumps 2 MPG. The gearvendors is $2800 bucks but at $2. 40 a gallon it wouldn't take too long to pay it back. And to boot less RPM means less wear. I have an '05 Quad cab with 3:73's and a NV5600 coming in the next day or two. A gearvendors is in the plans for me this time around. Oo.

The only reason you need higher (numerically) rear end gears, or more speeds in the transmission, is because you don't have enough engine. With the Cummins we have the potential of being very happy with a 3:00 rear end and a 3 speed... . just need a few add on's!

Driven with em both and would never own anything but 4:10's for the following.

1. Unsurpassed acceleration when going through the the gears.

2. Superior 1st gear launch when pulling heavy.

3. Little to no difference in fuel economy when towing.

4. Higher rated towing capacity.

No flame suits required. :D

Mac

3.73's

Hi,

I live in Nazareth. I have a 2004. 5 with the nvg and 3. 73's. I pulled 10K back from Daytona up I81 a few weeks back. For that kind of towing I can't see any need for 4. 10's. I never hit a hill I couldn't accelerate on in 6th. I am not bombed in any way. Running empty I often wish for 3. 54's. Running in PA/NJ interstates you need to run 75-80 all the time. I know that high rpm's won't hurt the motor and I know there is a really small mpg issue. It's just annoying running empty at 2500. Also at that point I'm running less than 10psi of boost and 600 post turbo. All that being said if you found a truck that meets all your needs except for gears I would jump on it. If you want to drive my truck back to back with the one that has 4:10's PM me.

I have a 4. 10 diff. and have mixed feelings. I'd like it to turn slower on the highway, but, man, when entering the interstate in 5th and 6th gears, that truck launches! If I need to get away from a situation while doing highway speeds, very few stock trucks will beat me. My truck's slow on the take-off, especially since I let the NV5600 do its thing when shifting, but I filled up in Bowling Green KY and went to Baton Rouge LA with fuel to spare--got 21 MPG on the highway doing 70--does 19 MPG going to work. I'm happy but some days I wish I had a 3. 73 axle.

Thanks for all the info guys. Seems like either one will do fine. I'm still torn with the goods and bads of each although I tend to lean to the 4. 10 since it is pretty much the same as what I ordered in the G56 with 3. 73's. I'll probably take the truck with the closest equipment regardless of the gear... ... unless of course they release the G56's in the next day or so.

Grab the NV5600 while you can still find one. It's a proven transmission. You don't know what you're getting with the G56... Could be better or could be a problem.

I just returned from my dealer and my first test drive of my soon to be new truck. an 05 with the NV5600, Bright Silver Quad cab dually. All I can say is SWEEEEEEEET!

Goes out tomorrow for a line x bed liner and we sign all the papers Friday morning.

The dealer has access to a patriot blue one equally equiped if anyones interested.
