Injector's or 4 " Exhaust

I've just started to make modifications to my truck and need some input on which exhaust each of you thinks is the best solution. Currently I am stock with an EZ. My gauges ( EGT, Boost, and transmission Temp) are going in next week with my new Mag-Hytec double deep transmission pan and rear diff cover. Next comes a DTT VB & TC and DDII's. So here's my question, Do I need a turbo back 4" exhaust or do I just need a new high performance 3" muffler? Also, I'm guessing that big round thing in front of my muffler is my resonator, can I lose that?

Sorry to be so dense, but any help is greatly appreciated.

EGT's are the concern.........

You wont gain much performance from the 4". It will help with EGT's and sounds a lot better. That's pretty much the set up in mine and they are under controll. I can't tell at what point it helped the most because it was one of my earliest mods. That and the BHAF and I can't push EGT's over 1200°.

If you remove the resonator you'll probably end up with a drone at 2K - 23K RPM. You might get it from the 4" also. Mine is pretty bad so I'm installing a 4" resonator to see if I can get it to stop.

I opted for the walker 21468 glass pack muffler. Basically for cost and it was a pretty easy installation. I haven't noticed any blinding performance increase but feel I get a little better mileage. As for the resonator, it eliminates the turbo noise out the exhaust. I kind of like the sound without it.

No Choice

If you can spend the bucks - - Just start with the 4" system, you'll end up with it before long anyway -- just like I did!

Denny;) ;) ;) ;)

I chose the 3" route because up to 350HP 4" really is not needed. 4" from turbo down will slow spool up and produce some turbo lag. I also wrapped the first 4' or so including the exhaust elbow with header wrap. Helped spool up faster & reduced noise.

total for 3"+install & header wrap was about $145. 00 that would leave you about $300 left over for going towards your other mods. However the 4" set ups do sound cool, but sound does not always = speed :)

I thought that I read here that a 4" exaust would have a much quicker spool up than a 3" due to the less restrictive opening and also that the factory turbo down pipe was almost a 2. 5" due to the type of bends. Maybe I'm wrong? Can someone clearify?

Jon

I want the 4" :D But if there is reason I won't, I'll just get the DD2's:D

4" Exhaust

You will notice the turbo spools up faster, lower exhaust temps, cools down faster at shut off. 4" flows 1000 cfm vs 3" flows about 350 cfm depending on muffler and cat. You will like the deep tone of the Jardine system :D . Sam

I just got the Jardine, I like the system, install was a breeze with no mods what so ever but there is the drone. I have 3:54 gears and 245 tires and the sound is fine till 2100+ then it is louder, on the road at 70-75 it's fine then at 80-85 the noise gets worse the smooths out at 90 and back cool at 100;) at 2900 RPM you hardly notice it... ... lol

Thanks for all the input, but I'm left with one question. One post says the 4" will improve spool up and one says it will slow down spool up and create turbo lag. Can I get clarification?

JGort,

Lot's of different opinions huh? I have the exact same set up that you're going to end up with (DTT TC & VB, DD2's, EZ, Mag HyTec Double Deep, Gauges, etc). I chose to go with eliminating the stock muffler and resonator and replacing it with a new muffler and 3" straight pipe on a recommendation for Bill K. at DTT. I went with a Midas Rhino 911 (about $230 complete - muffler, straight pipe install, etc). If you go this route have the shop install your muffler as far back in the void left by the stock equip. and fill the void with 3" pipe. Hope this helps, good luck in your decision. -Ken

About a week ago I had to remove the stock resonator and muffler. They were cracked... ..... Went to local muffler shop and had him install a 3" flow through muffler. It looks like a strait pipe with a muffler around it. It isn't any louder until 2100 r'''''s. Then it will break glass:D I have lower egt on a pull up a hill that I used to pull 1250 I now cant get to 1200*. Spool up shouldn't be a problem with the hY turbo. I will have DTT tc & Vb, DDII's, in janurary. Have a VA box and it runs real well. Don't waste money... . I paid $130 for the three inch muffler installed. Does the same as the four but cost less.

Like already mentioned, 3" is good for ~350 hp.

IMO if you are going to be ~325 hp, save the $$$ and just go with a 3" performance muffler and drop the resonator.

4" does sound a little nicer, IMO, but I have heard plenty of very nice 3" exhaust too. The nicest 3" I have heard so far was with a small Magnaflow muffler.

JMHO,

Ryan

for your power level i would go with a 3" straight thru muffler , or do a cat bakc 4" system .

bill k was runing stock exhaust wit ha 3" rhino muff , no resonator to the tune of 13. 7's , so the 350hp is a moot point . don't know if he would have gone faster with the 4" ???

if i hadn't switched to an HX40 i was going back to a 3" system to see how it works , still might , the 40 is coming off and i have the pieces i need to install the 3" with resonator back in its place , i have a headpipe off a 97 , less restrictive bends than my 2000 headpipe and will probably do a 4" catback style system because i have the pieces to go that route .

Rhino 3" performance muffler

Well I got it on the truck today. I bought the muffler on-line, 49. 95$ + 10$ S/H and my local muffler shop charged me 50$ to do the install including the 3" pipe, I had them remove the resonnator. 109. 95$ total cost, can't beat that.

EGT are down about 100*/150* overall from the stock muffler and the turbo spools up a lot faster than it did, gotta love that. Noise is a little deeper tone but I wouldn't say louder. No drone as far as I can tell.

Overall I'm very satisfied with the set up, if I had one complaint it would be that I wish it had been a bit louder, but it keeps the wife happy and that alone is worth something right?

Thanks to Stephan Kondolay for all the info in helping me make the decision.

I like it, FWIW

Glenn

Could swear I got an extra pound or two of boost but that may just be me... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ..... if I keep driving the way I have been today I don't think MPG will get better!:D :D :D

Why not two 5" stacks ;) . I've got all my stuff rounded up and will install this weekend(thanks Oasis3). Only drawback is the hole I have to cut in my bed. Oh well the positives out weigh the negatives:D . Doug

JGort,

The reason the 3" spools up faster is because of back pressure. There is more back pressure in a 3" pipe than there is in a 4" pipe.

The back pressure of the 3" causes the boost pressure in the turbo to build up faster (spool up). When going to the 4" the lower back pressure causes the boost pressure to build up slower, making slower spool up.

The same holds true when using the stock turbo or a bigger turbo... bigger turbos are slower spooling up.

Of course this all depends on what power level you're at. That's why we are not seeing any gain below 350hp. You simply aren't producing the volume. My opinion is the 4" does flow more volume, but your engine has to be producing the volume to fill the bigger pipe to make use of it.

Removing the factory junk muffler and resonator reduces EGT's the same as any 4" exhaust will. The reason behind that is flow. You've got no flow with the choking factory junk.
