Hi everyone,

Has any body out there swapped the muffler under their truck for a straight through pipe.

Does it make it alot louder and does it give any extra power or does the engine need some back pressure to run good. ?

I can't remember if somebody told me this, or if i had a dream...

the muffler had been cut off my stock exhaust when i bought the truck. the new 4in with a muffler made more power and was a little more quiet. some back pressure is a good thing and a glass pack exhaust can make more power than a straight through. the straight pipe is more for those who want to hear the pipes, not really a problem on a 12v.

Thank's,

I think i'll leave mine alone, i just wasn't sure if it would change anything with a straight through pipe ,makes sense though.

I put in a 4" straight pipe to reduce my egt's a little. They were getting a little too high when I was towing my trailer up a steep hill (like Cajon Pass in Southern California). It's a bit louder now, but the egt's came down by about 200 degrees.

Back pressure is never good. It's the unfortunate side effect of exhaust pipes (and whatnot). On non-turbo engines, people think back pressure is needed, however that is wrong. What IS needed, is a tuned exhaust that increases low-rpm exhaust velocity to help with scavenging of the exhaust from the cylinders (and sucking the intake charge in). The side effect of pipes optimized for low-rpm is that they're generally too small for the maximum volume of exhaust at high-rpm use - which is where the backpressure comes from, and that's why some people think you need back pressure.
