I recently installed the Jardine 4" system with the magnaflow muffler.

I towed the 5th wheel thru the mountains and around 2100-2250RPM I get a ear deafening "DRONE" that makes it so you can't hear nothing at all. ( good if the wifes talking, but hard on the ears otherwise)

Tactically, it can be used to "drone" out her yapping, but still hard on the ears. . LOL

The wife is not a happy camper and has made comments about any future "upgrades" may need her approval... ...

Any sugestions as to a muffler change that would bring it back to the stock quite sound, yet not hamper the free flow system the 4" has.

Also a muffler that would be the same length,.

Thanks for any help. . Ed

No drone with the Banks muffler on my 4" system. I've ridden in rigs with free flow Walkers that are quiet also. There was a post here last week from a fellow who installed two free flow mufflers in a row on his truck, said it made things really quiet with no increase in EGTs. The way free flow mufflers work is they create echos coming from different directions, when the echos come together they cancel out each other. Seems to me if a muffler isn't specifically designed for the tones of a diesel that the sounds might not fully cancel which could cause a drone.

Jardine will take care of you.

Ed, Don't give up on your Jardine system. With more and more of these systems (Jardine, Rips, Banks, Janetty... . )getting out their more trucks that get the "drone" are showing up. It is probably a very small percentage in the big picture but it really sucks if your one who does NOT like noise like me!

Jardines sytem is designed for DIESELS! It is high quality stuff with a good free flowing straight through design Magnaflow muffler.

I had the same problem and Jardine workd with me (at his cost) until I was totally satisfied.

Several have tried clamping angle iron to the muffler or pipe leading to the muffer, etc with success. It did not help me at all.

I have also read success with a smaller mini muffler installed between the two long sections of pipe infront of the muffler. It helped mine but again it was still their. In my case the installation of a second muffler (same as the first) just behind the trransmission hanger totally elimneated mine.

I have also heard of some succes be relocating the muffler forward in between the two long pipe sections instead of behind both pieces similare to the factory location. You could try that.

You will quickly find out that 4" band clamps are much easier to work with, look much better, and allow for unlimited R&R of the system. If you used the gulitine clamps supplied with the system, you might call Jardine and see if he could send you one of the mine mufflers. You would not have to take any clamps off to install that. Just measure and cut out the mount of pipe (on the straight section just behind the trasmission hanger). You should be able to move the rear part of the system enough back to get the new muffer installed. It is a slip fit front and back, muffer being ID front and back so it will slip right over the existing pipe. Buy some band clamps for any new joints. You might find the band clamps seal much better and install them on all the joints.

Your wife will like to ride with you again once it is quiet... . Mine did!

Is the drone louder than a straight pipe? I have the original pipes on mine but they're all straight. It doesn't seem very loud at all, except when the Pacbrake engages, the I get an annoying hiss. Heck, the wife can still talk over it so I guess I need some more mods :D

I was thinking of puttin a 4 inch exhaust on, but I don't know if my EGT's will go up higher if I have a muffler or if they drop enough without a muffler to make it worthwhile?????????

Obviously, you guys like the idea of a muffler and the 4 inch, but have any of you gone from a 3 inch straight pipe to a 4 inch system????

Thanks

I initially used only the muffler clamps provided. I got under the truck and put my hand around the clamped joints and found a lot of exhaust coming from around the joints .....

Yours truely decided to plug in his MIG welder and weld all the joints. Any muffler change will involve grinding off the welds around the existing muffler.

On the positive side, I had to work the CTD real hard to get close to 1300 degree's. I try not to go over 1200 just for the safety sake of it.

So that was good. :)

I guess I'll research muffler types etc. thanks for all the help. Ed

I don't know if this would work on yours. I used a (hollow) Walker 21471 straight thru 4" and it was too loud to have the right window down - my tailpipe is in front of the rear wheel. I didn't want another muffler in my junk pile so I drilled the outer shell and stuffed it with steel wool (10 packs) and patched the holes. I didn't have drone but it deepened the tone and deadened the turbo scream. Now it sounds the way I wanted it in the first place - like the old Walker Continental steel pack. Craig

I did..got a Jac-brake

I put the 4" on mine.

It puts the down pipe from the manifold close to the firewall, but i wrapped the pipe with a heat shield that cuts the heat 50-70-%

A footnote to this post;

I called Jardine and they are sending *At no cost* a second muffler to try and kill the drone noise.

Talk about a standup company!!! Most folks would tell ya go blow diesel smoke where the sun don't shine!

I'll install the second muffler and see if it kills the drone. Our conversation on the phone lent some thought to possibly the muffler install area.

Maybe if the muffler was just past the first length(or trans area pipe hanger) that might reverse the drone. In any case, the second muffler will go in line riht behind the trans pipe hanger.

I'll report back with my findings.
