well, heres how it went down:

since the upgraded turbo (which came with specially made downpipe), I had a embarassingly cobbled up exhaust system. . I mean 2 year old beat up DPP spiral muffler (has seem a sledge hammer or two to aid in removal countless times) + 3 band clamps holding 3 seperate pieces of pipe together, and a turn down hanger off the back of the muffler just before the rear axle... there were countless leaks, But it was the best I could do to get back on the road and not run Downpipe only - ohh yeah, and coat hanger suspending mos of it

WELLL... I did not want to buy a full system seeing as my factory tail pipe is 4 inch, and my new DP is full 4 inch... SO, I bought DPP's cummins "600" muffler replacement kit (hangers welded on the muffler) and it came with a slightly "S" pipe to line up with factory piping (though I had no factory pipe anyway)

So I go measure and buy a 36 inch piece of 4 inch, and 4 band clamps (the kit came with crush style clamps, yuck)... DP to 36inch piece, clamp, 36inch piece to included "S" pipe, clamp, to muffler, clamp, cut 2 inches off front of tail pipe, and CLAMP!!

Let me tell ya, I never knew a properly hung and functioning exh system would add so much to drivability!! - truck spools WAY better, sounds killer (no drone, but a nice low growl) -- AND low end torque feels WAY UP!

I guess that leaky mostly open exh I had was killing bottom end

TOTAL $$$$$$$$

DPP "600" muffler replacement - about $160 (retail)

4 band clamps - $35

3 feet of 4 inch pipe - I think it was $20 (bought it like 8 months ago)

TOTAL -- $215 (and thats retail!), full 4 inch exhaust, and I can remove it super easy, etc

Needless to say I could have used the clamps given and saved some coin, BUT the band clamps work SOOOO much better...

good love it

Hey Tomeygun, that is the exact setup I planned on going with. I figure, why spend the extra cash when I already have 4" to the tailpipe. It was that or the aeroturbine, but I'm steering that way because of cost effectiveness and the fact that almost everyone loves the sound this muffler makes.

Do band clamps join two "same sized" pipes together? Meaning: I can butt two pieces of 4" i. id. pipe, and not have to have one 4"i. d. and one 4"o. d. ? Can I cut the tailpipe 3. 5 - 4" transition off and use it at the factory downpipe?

follow me?

Thanks,

Andy

BTW, Tommy, I still owe you a phone call. :) Fighting horrible deathwobble at the moment... :(

Simple answer, either way...

you can buy band clamps that are for jointing to 4" OD pipes, OR buy the preformed ones that fit over the slip joints - one side 4"ID, one side 4"OD

I used a regular band clamp for the DP to 3 foot piece (4"OD) - and then preformed ones to go over the slip fits of the kit (plus the rear one, the tailpipe sliped right into the muffler after I sazalled 2 inches off it

And I used an impact gun to really tighten the crud of out'em them to make sure the seal is nice and tight :)

Tomeygun You should have went with the Dual Exhaust IT SOUNDS SO SWEET. WILDMAN Oo.

Gald you liked them... Installed pretty easy, did they?

You need to get a pic/video of the TST on a high level and smoke rolling from both sides, awesome!

That looks like a great setup "T"..... You sold me on the band clamps, I will be ordering and installing within the next week or so... .

4" straight thru aluminized muffler to replace factory thingy---$65

Add a few pieces to make up for previous exhaust tinkerings---$10

5" stainless tip---$0, helped a friend move

Rattling the windows of a BMW POS as I went around that **Nasty word for a female dog** who tried to kill herself in front of me this mornig -------------------priceless.

when i did the exhaust on my truck, i just snugged up my band clamps by hand enough to hold the pipes in place. . if it leaks a little bit... oh well

[diesel exhaust won't kill you, doesn't contain enough CO]

Not only that, its like coffee in the moring to me :)

I tried to get my wife to wear #2 as perfume, but she declined :-laf

EDIT - the exact reason I like band clamps, My stupid self install the muffler backward (duh, with louvers point forward, opps)

The air is supposed to flow over the louver, not into (I knew it was that way, But I had not had my morning wiff of diesel, so i was still sleeping)

So, 15 minutes and that things pointing right way. I love simple jobs :D

Tried to re-use a band clamp on Fri. when I installed my new muffler. Must have stretched to its max the first time 'cause it wouldn't tighten up again. Tailpipe was swingin' in the breze. Had to go with a crimper.

Tommeygun, how did you know you installed it backwards?? I've been told that they have a nasty "farting" sound if you install them incorrectly, is this true??

Well, first it was a kinda tight fit, and I called to check which way the louvers should point... It sounded about the same, but with a little flutter

I would have not known based upon sound

Flex pipe!

heh, I have flex pipe in place of my cat and muffler. . I think I'll do this. This looks cool. The flexpipe resonates like CRAZY. This will fix that.

Curious as to the muffer you have... I think I'll just go muffler-less for now even. Just need to get a hanger or 2 welded on to the pipe... .
