I have a few 4-inch exhaust questions.

Here’s what I might be getting Monday if I pull the trigger. A welding/fabrication buddy has a hot deal for me. He has been installing lots of exhausts on F**** and Dura**** so I think he knows what he is doing. He is willing to install a 4-inch aluminized exhaust from turbo to tip. It is mandrel bent, welded, (drilled and tapped for my yet to be installed EGT probe), with a 5 inch tip with no muffler. He’s willing to trade me a couple of kegs of my top quality micro-brewed beer for the whole exhaust deal installed. I know it's a good deal but I still am a little worried. Anything I need to watch out for or ask him before I do this?

My questions are... .

I did some searching and have seen most folks on TDR say a 4-inch exhaust does not void a warranty?

Has anyone’s warranty been voided for only a non-stock exhaust? My only other mod is a BHAF.

I currently have 65,000+ miles on my 2001 and will likely pass 100,000 in about a year (by fall of 2004). I have only had my 2001 in to the dealer once for a new lift pump and injection pump which where covered under warranty at 41,000 miles.

Will anyone notice and care I that I have a non-stock exhaust cops, feds, smoke police like the emissions folks here in Colorado.

Will I see any notice increase in noise, power, mileage, or smoke?

Thanks

4" exhaust is a good thing and you should see some benefits to installing it in the performance department. However go with an engineered system with a muffler. No point getting too much attention for being loud. We have complete 4" aluminized and stainless steel systems available.

Sounds like a good deal if it is all your friend says it is. Did you mean "no muffler", a straight pipe. If so, you will gain noise you may not like-or may love!

If you already have air-in; many dealers will consider your warrantee already voided!

You won't gain any HP, per se, but will come in handy if you add box or injectors in future.

Give mine a listen

Sandbrew,

I work close to C-470 and 285 if you would like to hear a 4" straight with a BHAF. As far as the emissions, I've had no problems. I get the diesel emissions test done at Andersen's Foreign Car Service LTD next to Christopher's Dodge. As far as the dealer and warranty, don't know but had some good luck with Christopher Dodge (others have had nothing but trouble).

Greyghost,

I might take you up on your offer to hear your truck. I drive by 285 & 470 nearly everyday. Shoot me an email -- email address removed --

Have you had any of the dreaded drone issues?

I've used Andersons and Christophers and also had good results a good dealer service.

Car Nut,

I haven't decided on anything yet. I will probably do something in the near future. Most likely a 4inch exhaust with either a high flow muffler or a resonator. Wanna swap for some beer?

PS Greyghost, I see your're a CBA member so am I. How come you are not out hunting? I saw 2 nice 6x6 bulls on my way to work this morning. I didn't draw an archery tag but I have a muzzleloader tag that starts Saturday.

I wouldn't put my egt probe post turbo, as it appears you may do. You'll have to be guessing by 300-500 degrees to keep track of your temps. Maybe not a big deal if you don't get into bombs, but IMO, performing math calculations while driving doesn't make sense. A friend of mine had a post turbo egt, and he changed it over to pre and was shocked to find it had been ~450 - 600 difference, when he had been assuming it was 300-350. He's heavily bombed and used to brag how his max egt's were 1200:eek:

Incoming $. 02...

Are you into motorcycles? - Harleys or chopper style bikes? Then this is one easy way to decide if you want a muffler or straight piped. Stock OEM Harley pipes vs after market straight pipes. Whichever you prefer, do the same on your CTD. Our trucks won't sound quite the same, but it is a fairly close comparison in my opinion.

I had the muffler on my 4" system for about a year, removed it 18 months ago, and will never go back. I am certain there is absolutely ZERO performance or EGT difference between straight piped or straight through/full flow muffler, it is purely a personal preference for what sound you want.

Sandbrew ...

I PMed ya. And to answer your PS I leave tomorrow, gone for a week.

PS I'm going to throw out a plug for a local shop, Lakewood Brake and Muffler. They are a Banks authorized distributor and have a no name mandrel bent system as well. Ask for Adam.

Hi Guys. I have a side question on this 4" exhaust topic.

Plan on getting an exhaust brake. Was thinking I'd get a Jacobs since truck only has 37000 miles. Would that present a problem if I later decided to throw on some Banks Power options? Should I figure on going with a Banks brake in that case?

Reason I'm stating Banks is my son is enamored with their brand due to their advertising, and he's the one who would be paying for any bombs that go into this thing. ! :D

PS- and whoever is bartering for micro-brew, I gotta find something you want!!:D

And I gotta get busy and have a son. . . nobody told me they were good for buying bombs, woulda made all the difference 30 or so years ago. Also, anybody got any hard facts on how much opening up the exhaust lowers the temps. I've seen 1,500 without even trying hard. Scart heck outta me. . . happened affore I knew it, really fast.

OTRPU,

Cool as cool can be. Usually ran around 800 F to 900 F running around town empty (Colorado foothills). With my 4" I'm down to 500 F to 800 F. Also notice after the comp, injectors and BHAF towing is real nice and no EGT issues when loaded to 10K. Also when the trucks coasting down hill the EGTs will drop to about 150 F, when sitting still idling the EGTs are 300 F. :D

Hope this helps

Thanks for all the input.

It looks like I have a couple TDR members close enough with 4inchers (exhausts that is) that I can listen to.
